Man Cave

We are in this series, man cave for the month of June.
How did this series get birthed ? We have an extraordinarily gifted and anointed Pastor who is in tune
1 Chronicles 12:32 From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take

What is a man cave? When did that term first get coined?

That idea of a garage space that allows a wife to visually banish the masculine aesthetic of her husband goes back to the 70’s and 80’s, but one of the first references actually naming these spaces as “man caves” wasn’t until the 1992 book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, where someone referenced a man retreating to his “cave” to unwind and relax.
*if you’re just joining us we are talking about our man cave series. Pastor A preached this past Sunday and tonight we’re going to dive deeper into being in a cave. What it means for us as believers and how we can grow from it*
Before we really dive into this lesson, let’s first identify some keywords for tonight. Let’s talk about what it means to us and where we can find some of these terms in the Bible.

Refuge. What is refuge?

Psalm 46:1  God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
shelter, “hope” “trust” 1 refuge, shelter - from rain or storm, from danger.
Exodus 21:12 “Anyone who assaults and kills another person must be put to death. 13 But if it was simply an accident permitted by God, I will appoint a place of refuge where the slayer can run for safety. 14 However, if someone deliberately kills another person, then the slayer must be dragged even from my altar and be put to death

What about a cave ? What does a cave mean? What does a cave symbolize ? Where have we seen different caves in the Bible?

Hiding place
Genesis 19:30; Lot and his family hid in a cave after being rescued from Sodom and Gomorah
Joshua 10; 5 Amorite Kings hid in the cave in Makkedah after they were defeated by Israel
1 Kings 19 Elijah’s hid in a cave in Horeb after running from Jezebel
*On Sunday you taught from the text 1 Samuel 22:1 and 2. Lets read it. You really honed in on verse 1a. Reads verse again*
In 1 Samuel 22 we see that David has sought out refuge in Gath. He sees that is not a good or safe place and then escapes to the cave of Adullam.

Can you speak to that? What does it mean for us as believers to find refuge in something, realize its not what we thought it was and run to some place else ?

1 Samuel 21:10 So David escaped from Saul and went to King Achish of Gath. 11 But the officers of Achish were unhappy about his being there. “Isn’t this David, the king of the land?” they asked. “Isn’t he the one the people honor with dances, singing,
‘Saul has killed his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”
12 David heard these comments and was very afraid of what King Achish of Gath might do to him. 13 So he pretended to be insane, scratching on doors and drooling down his beard.
14 Finally, King Achish said to his men, “Must you bring me a madman? 15 We already have enough of them around here! Why should I let someone like this be my guest?”
David was a man of wisdom and discernment, he was desperate but he didn’t let desperation mislead him. When he realized he wasn’t welcomed he quickly followed God’s lead and moved on.
sometimes we put refuge and trust in things that God hasn’t called us too. like trying to fit a square in a circle
Proverbs 3:5-6;

You asked a really good question on Sunday “What do you when that which is desirable disappoints you?” As believers, help us with that. What do we do?

Understand God’s will over your own wants and desires
Psalm 40:7-8; Jesus … Garden of Gethsemane Mathew 26:39;

Pastor has been teaching on Wednesdays on the dangers of isolation. You preached that the cave David was in was symbolic of his emotional and psychological condition. The cave represents disconnect , confusion and warfare. How do we get out of a cave if we find ourself in one?

Sometimes it’s not trying to find out how to get out but what am i to learn while i’m in there Serenity Prayer
Proverbs 4:7’ in all your getting get understanding

A followup to that question is if we have pushed someone into a cave. If we are the Saul’s how do we go about helping get them out?

Hopefully you are not Saul, He had a reprobate mind
1 Samuel 18:10 The very next day a tormenting spirit from God overwhelmed Saul, and he began to rave in his house like a madman. David was playing the harp, as he did each day. But Saul had a spear in his hand, 11 and he suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the wall. But David escaped him twice.

* I will reference when Pastor A said women pushed men into the cave with our attitude and mouth*

I’m not a chauvinist
It goes both ways

You said that in a cave there is sometimes Casamigos, wetbars, playstations, games all of these distractions, things that can keep us from really dealing with our issues.

But also in the cave is God. Can we talk about how do we fill our voids with God instead of games, with His divine nature instead of distractions? How do we find this peace of God that surpasses’s all of our understanding?

Daily Walk , purpose to break away
Jesus Mark 1:35
Mark 10:38-42

Although we have focused on David tonight and being in his cave which could be symbolic of him running from something and to something else to get away, who were some other Biblical characters that ran from something and to another place? What were they running from and what did they find when they got to the next destination?

Most famously Elijah 1 Kings 19’ he ran right into God
likewise Adam and Eve ran an hid behind a tree where God was standing next to them
Peter ran from purpose Mathew 26:33-35
As we end. The title of your text was “ A friend in need is a friend indeed”
You gave the definition of a friend. Friend - someone you know and an intimate or bond of affections exclusive of sexual or family relation. You talked about David and Jonathan friendship. You gave us four points Jonathan didn’t abandon David, he interceded for David, he was somebody David could vent to and he was a friend David could trust.
At the end you referenced Proverbs 18:24 a friend that sticks closer than a brother and said it was Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. How can we come to know Jesus as a friend?
Discipleship Precede’s friendship 1John 5:3;

What can we expect from this man cave series for the rest of this month?

You gotta stay tuned and plugged in .

Would you rap for us again?
