Name them
blood, frogs, gnats
flies, death of livestock, boils

What ya’ll got for me?

insights, questions? . . . . .
We will focus on the 9 plagues tonight
This awesome display of God’s Power
is there a pattern?
is there something we can learn about God?
Let’s review

First “Ask: in Chapter 5

Pharaoh said no
Israelites suffer
people mad, moses mad

Second “Ask” in Chapter 7

Aaron threw down staff - miracle of the serpent
Pharaoh’s magicians can do it too
king said no

Blood (1)

Aaron took the staff and struck the water of the Nile
Could Pharaoh’s magicians do the same? (yes)
it affected Israelites and Egyptians
seems probable it lasted for seven days
other plagues were temporary
7 days mentioned
now to chapters 8-10

Frogs (2)

warned Pharaoh
Aaron raised his staff over the waters
Pharaoh’s magicians can do the same
it affected Israelites and Egyptians
frogs into houses and even beds
jump in your ovens and cooking bowls
jump on you
Pharoah begged for Moses to take them away, and promised to let them go, Moses said set the time time (could have picked same day)
frogs all died, dead frogs pile in heaps . . . stinking
Pharaoh said no again (so he lied)

Gnats (3)

no warning this time
Aaron raised staff and struck the ground
swarms of gnats
Pharaoh’s people couldn’t do the same (finger of God)
serpent, blood, frogs . . . but not this
gnats covered everything - people and animals
it affected Israelites and Egyptians
Pharaoh said no
probably found a way to get rid of them

Flies (4)

Moses warns him first
no staff used this time, Moses just prophesied
and the next day homes filled with flies
ground covered with them
Only Egyptians suffered this time (explain land of Goshen)
Pharaoh said you can go
but after Moses prayed for flies to leave, the king changed his mind

Livestock (5)

(chapter 9)
warning and Moses prophesied that it would happen tomorrow if the king did not let them go
apparently Pharaoh said no
plague killed horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep, goats
but not animals of Israelites
Pharaoh investigated and found out that all of the Israelite animals were fine
. . . this did not change Pharaoh’s heart

Boils (6)

Moses and Aaron get the soot, but have Moses threw soot in the air
and it caused boils to break out on people and animals
just Egyptians (including magicians)
Exodus 9:12 NASB95
12 And the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had spoken to Moses.
first time we hear of the Lord’s hardening his heart, so before that it was Pharaoh hardening his own heart
So it seems up to this point he has been stubborn and has been lying of his on volition . . . but now we are getting to reprobate mind (can’t think straight anymore)

Hail (7)

warning and lesson: could have wiped you out, but spared you for a purpose - spread the Lord’s fame throughout the earth
sometimes getting by is really a set up
getting by not because you’re lucky, slick, but God wants your fall to be greater . . . that’s why some evil people get promoted (greater fall, the less will reach more people)
hail will come, bring everything inside
some Egyptians started believing Moses and brought their stuff inside
some didn’t - Pharaoh wasn’t the only one stubborn
Moses lifted the staff towards the sky
hailstorm, continous lighting
destroyed everything in the field
but everything was fine in Goshen
Pharaoh said you can go . . . but after it stopped, Pharaoh AND his officials refused to let the people go
It is explained in chapter 10, God also made Pharaoh and his officials stubborn, (referring to the hail)
they will see my power
so you can tell your children and grandchildren
so you will now that I am the Lord
in other words, I want everybody to know

Locust (8)

gives Pharaoh a warning
Pharaoh’s officials get scared
So Pharaoh tried to negotiate but negotiations fell apart
Moses raised his staff
locust - giant grasshoppers
they will eat everything not destroyed by hail
will fill your houses
so many that it darkened the land (that’s not a dark cloud, that’s a swarm of insects)
after locust, Pharaoh said I have sinned,
God caused a strong west wind to take the locust into the red sea
then Pharoah changed his mind (Lord hardened his heart)
explains why we see people in trouble but won’t take the smart way out

Darkness (9)

Moses lifted his hands toward the sky
darkness you can feel for three days
can’t see each other, no one moved
Goshen was fine (amazing!)
Pharaoh tried to negotiate again, but Moses said everything has to go
Pharaoh says get out (God hardened his heart), come back and I will kill you next time

Patterns

warnings come before destruction
Power of God displayed through different means:
Aaron with staff
Moses with staff
Moses with no staff
lifting hands to sky
prophesy
so you have to follow God’s leading
Aaron is slowly moving out of the picture (original plan)
God is in control
can’t negotiate with God (he can negotiate with you)
people trying to do a part of what the Lord wants
as time passed you could eventually you could see the difference between God’s people (Goshen) and other people.
Lesson Reminder - Why has God spared you?
to do his will or make an example of you
