Text: 1 Corinthians 11:26
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Intro: Tonight before we partake in the Lords supper I would like us to consider a few things about the events of that evening.
And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
Tonight before partaking I’d like us to have a little preparation time so to speak… In doing so I’d like us to consider the foreknowledge of Christ!
Mark 14:12-15.
Jesus knew all the circumstances and conditions before hand. He knew the place, the person, what he was bearing, and where to follow him, He even told them what to say to this man and what his response to them would be…
And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
I’d like to consider tonight that all the men had partook that night, and that partaking was not about them… It was about what He was going to do for them… The same is true for us tonight… If tonight is all about me, or me making my self worthy, or even the remembrance of sin…
But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
That’s old covenant stuff… Tonight is about our communion with Christ which is only made possible because of Christ!
Here is really the point I want to drive home...
And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
Therefore...
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
We can rest assure, that He is coming again!
The Lord’s supper should remind of us of His imminent return!
He said to Paul… “this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Tonight we are not called to remember His birth, His perfect life, or even the miracles which He performed. Tonight is about remembering the ONE who achieved redemption for you and for me! He did that through His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary, the One who’s soul was made an offering for sin, and is the One that was dead, but now liveth! The One that is coming back…
The bread:
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
Tonight is not what brings us in union with Him, but to remember His sacrificial death on the cross and Him becoming our substitute because that is what united us with Christ! Tonight is about the communion brought about by that union made by His sacrifice and substitute! Today, He is in heaven, we have studied His glory, so In remember what He has done, I hope we are drawn to Him, not to birth, not to His perfect life, and not to His miracles, but to the One that was dead, but now liveth!
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
