Acts 3:19
Introduction
Peter does not accuse and condemn God’s people, he acknowledges their sin and guilt showing them their
need, not freeing them from their guilt of being ignorant of their actions. They ignorantly followed their
leaders not knowing they were crucifying the Messiah. In fact, their rebellion led to their ignorance
against God the only one who could reveal who Christ is (not flesh and blood). The Israelites are God’s
people, in God’s house (the temple), at the hour of prayer (9 th hour, 3 PM), yet they’re condemned as
sinners before a leaping man who’s first time in the temple after being delivered from his disability. Just
so happened they were in the right place at the right time, they didn’t need their sins covered they needed
them removed. Peter proclaimed faith in Jesus’ name completely healed this man, you know him, and see
him, before your face (presence) as evidence against your failed murder attempt. On the contrary, the goal
is to get your sins blotted out, despite your past, let’s change your present, and let God write your future.
1. Forgiven
a. On the cross Christ forgave those didn’t know what they were doing (Romans, Rulers, Religious),
but forgiveness doesn’t benefit the one pardoned unless they accept it, the woman caught in
adultery, didn’t come but was brought, heard Jesus say neither do I condemn you go & sin no more.
b. Psalm 51 when David was guilty of killing a man, he asked God to wash me with hyssop, the high
priest used hyssop to purify, according to Hebrews 5 we have a greater high priest/Lamb of God,
Jesus Christ, song writer said, “What can wash away my sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus”.
c. Christ appeased God when he paid our sin debt, but Christ conviction validated our pardon.
2. Forgotten
a. As a plea bargain to sinful Israel God made a promise to not only blot out sins for his sake, but to
not remember them Isaiah 43:25, man enjoy seeing us at our worst, and the worst in us, not God.
b. Psalm 51:1 David appeals to God to blot out his sins according to his tender mercy, man never
forgets our sins, Satan reminds us of our sins, but God promise to be merciful & forget our sins
Hebrews 8:12, casting our sins in the depths of the sea Micah 7:19 unreachable to deep sea divers.
c. Dr. William Barclay said because the ink used in ancient times had no acid, when they wrote on
papaya manuscripts and wanted to remove the writing, they simply wiped it away, the Lord’s nailed
scarred hand wiped away our sin. Lying, hatefulness, gossiping, whispering, pride, he wiped away.
3. Freed
a. The day of atonement would only provide compensation for one year, but man’s conscience was still
convicted, but who the (Son) set free is free indeed, despite guilty charges. Acquitted of all charges.
b. In Romans 8:1-2 Paul says there is no condemnation to them in Christ Jesus. Christian walk (life) is
determined by the law of the Spirit of life Romans 8:4. This law (Spirit of life) set us free (forever)
from the law of sin and death, Adamic nature, Mosaic Law. Free to live after the Spirit of life.
c. Believers are freed because our sins are blotted out, but not to use our liberty as a cloak to sin but
use it to serve. Paul and Silas were wrongfully imprisoned and whipped yet free to offer freedom to
the jailor and family, when you’re free you can worship God at anytime, anywhere, among anyone.
