Thank you all for coming this afternoon,
as we remember the life of Tina Dyck.
My name is Joseph Penner, I am the Associate Pastor here at LEMC.
I would like to begin by reading Psalm 23.

CALL TO WORSHIP/PRAYER

Psalm 23 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Let’s bow for prayer.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being our Shepherd.
Thank You for leading and guiding us,
and giving us all we need.
Thank You for being there for us even when we walk through difficult seasons of life…
Even seasons when we are faced with the reality of death,
Lord, You are with us.
We pray that You would draw near to the hearts of this family,
that You would be their source of comfort…
that You would walk with them,
and give them confidence in Your goodness and power,
no matter how deep the valley seems.
Help them to look to You,
knowing that You desire to restore their souls,
and lead them in Your righteousness.
We do not understand Your ways Lord,
but we pray that You would give us a confident assurance that You are God, You are in control, and You are working all things for Your glory and our good!
We know that You used suffering in the life of Your Son, Jesus Christ,
to bring about the salvation of anyone who trusts in His sacrifice.
We pray and trust, that You would use the suffering of this family,
for the building of Your kingdom, and their own spiritual growth.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen!

Message

Psalm 91 ESV
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
The Confidence
This psalm is a beautiful reminder of the Lord’s protection for those who trust in Him.
There is no threat or danger in this life that can harm us, unless the Lord allows it.
Those who trust in God,
are secure in the shelter of the Most High.
There is no one higher than Him.
Those who trust in God,
are safe in the shadow of the Almighty.
There is no one more powerful than Him.
Because God is the highest and mightiest,
we should run to Him for security and peace.
When He is our confidence and trust,
we are safe.
Transition
The psalmist goes on to talk about the specific dangers the Lord is able to deliver us from…
The Dangers
God will deliver you from the hand of the enemy.
Our greatest enemy is Satan, who comes to seek, kill and destroy…
but he is powerless against God.
Since God is on our side,
we do not need to fear any enemy.
God will deliver you from sickness and disease.
God is greater than all illnesses and plagues…
He is greater than cancer.
Those who trust in God do not need to fear any disease,
because His power is greater!
The confidence we have in this life,
is that God is greater than all enemies and plagues,
therefore we have no need to fear!
Even when the danger presses all around us,
and others are falling,
we are safe from disaster,
because we have put our hope in the Lord Most High.
He will protect and deliver us.
He will send His angels to guard us,
to protect us,
and to give us victory!
Transition
Then the psalmist ends this passage with a promise from God…
The Lord’s Pledge
God Himself is the one speaking in this section, and He says…
Psalm 91:14–16 ESV
14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
God Himself promises to bless those who look to Him.
God will deliver His children… because they love and cling to Him!
God will protect His children… because they know His name!
God will answer His children… because they call to Him!
God will be with His children, rescue them, and honour them…
God will bless His children with long life, and save them… because they trust in Him!
Ending
Abe told me that this psalm became Tina’s favourite after her father passed away.
The death of her father was very hard on Tina,
but the Lord used it to help her see her need for a Saviour.
Abe told me that it was shortly after her father’s passing that she gave her life to Christ…
and confessed Jesus as her Lord and Saviour…
Tina put her confidence in the shelter of the Most High.
We know that God did choose to take her…
so did God fail Tina?
Not at all! Not even death can separate us from God!
Romans 8:31–39 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Praise God!
There is nothing in this life that can separate us from the love of our Saviour, Jesus Christ!
When we put our trust in Him, He will never fail us!
Death is just the doorway into eternal life in the presence of God, our refuge!
And the confidence and hope that we have in God…
is that even in circumstances that we would never choose,
like the death of loved one,
God is using it for His glory and our good.
God doesn’t waste even one second of our suffering…
2 Corinthians 4:17 (ESV)
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
Indeed, Paul says in Romans 8:18
Romans 8:18 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Gospel Call
Just as God used the passing of Tina’s father to show her her need for a Saviour,
I am confident that she would want you to think of your need for a Saviour.
God has formed us from the dust of the earth,
and one day, every one of us will return to dust.
We have no idea how long we have left…
we are not guaranteed today or tomorrow.
If you died today, would you go to heaven, or hell?
Maybe you think you’re a good person,
but the truth is that we know that we have all sinned…
we know that God is perfect, and we all fall short of perfect standard.
But God has not left us without hope…
He sent His Son, Jesus, the Messiah,
to live the perfect life we couldn’t live…
to die the death we deserved…
He rose to new life...
ascended to the right hand of the Father… and
one day He will return.
If you put your faith in Jesus today,
His blood covers all your sin…
every sin past, present, and future will be washed away!
You will be clothed in His righteousness…
it will be as if you lived His perfect life!
And you will have the promise that you will be raised from the dead as Christ was,
and you will live in God’s presence for all eternity.
This was the confident hope that Tina had!
I plead with you to follow her example and put your trust in Christ and all that He has done for you!
He is the only One who is able to save you!
Run to Jesus… call out to Him…
and He will save you… He will rescue you…
and bless you with the promise of eternal life!
Prayer
Lord, we thank You for Your power and protection for those who trust in You!
We thank You for Tina, and her example of confident trust in You!
Help us to understand our weakness,
so that we might draw near to You, the Almighty,
knowing that You will deliver us from all harm.
Help us to find our peace and security in You,
knowing that You will protect us, answer us, and satisfy us with Your salvation!
We thank You for these precious promises in Your Word,
and ask that You would supply greater measures of faith to believe them.
Help us to walk in obedience to Your Word, out of love for all that You have done for us,
as we look to the eternal hope we have in Christ!
In His name we pray, Amen!
Transition

Please continue to pray for them
and find ways to serve and bless them!

Dismiss

At this time you are dismissed.
You can exit through the back doors,
as we allow the family to say their final farewells.
Again, thank you for showing your love and support by being here this afternoon.

After Dismissal

After guests have left,
ask family to come up and say their final farewells starting from the back to the front.

Graveside Service

It is normal to want to cling to the body of someone we love.
However, the time has come to lay Tina’s body to rest until the day of resurrection.
Leaving her body in the ground feels permanent.
But just as Jesus was raised from the dead, so will those who have hoped in him be raised from the dead.
This earth will not hold the saints in the ground when the trumpet sounds.
Therefore, we await the coming resurrection of the dead when this body we now lay to rest will be transformed into a body that is fit for eternal life.
Until then we commit this body to the ground and trust God.
1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
Prayer
Lord, You are good, and You do good.
You were good in giving Tina to us.
You were good in leaving her with us for so long.
You were good in taking her from us.
Thank You for the hope we have in the resurrection,
and the second coming of Jesus, our Saviour,
where we will be united together with You in the clouds.
This hope we have through the death and resurrection of Christ,
and in whose name we pray. Amen!
