Introduction
The famous preacher D.L. Moody told about a Christian woman who was always bright, cheerful, and optimistic, even though she was confined to her room because of illness. She lived in an attic apartment on the fifth floor of an old, rundown building. A friend decided to visit her one day and brought along another woman—a person of great wealth. Since there was no elevator, the two ladies began the long climb upward. When they reached the second floor, the well-to-do woman commented, “What a dark and filthy place!” Her friend replied, “It’s better higher up.” When they arrived at the third landing, the remark was made, “Things look even worse here.” Again the reply, “It’s better higher up.” The two women finally reached the attic level, where they found the bedridden saint of God. A smile on her face radiated the joy that filled her heart. Although the room was clean and flowers were on the window sill, the wealthy visitor could not get over the stark surroundings in which this woman lived. She blurted out, “It must be very difficult for you to be here like this!” Without a moment’s hesitation the shut-in responded, “It’s better higher up.” She was not looking at temporal things. With the eye of faith fixed on the eternal, she had found the secret of true satisfaction and contentment.
What satisfies you? It might be the winning the game of fortnite. It might be getting into the school you wanted to for college.
What is biblical satisfaction?
Psalm 16 “A Miktam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

The outline for tonight comes from the Exalting Jesus in Psalms 1-50. By Danny Aiken.
We have the protection of the Lord. V.1-4
The faithful follower will seek the Lord and find satisfaction. V.1-3
In verse 1 we see that David is saying that he can go to God for refuge. What is refuge, and why should we go for that?
The world is darkness, the Lord is light.
Verse 2 we see that David proclaims that he has no good apart from him. Is he true or false?
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Mark 10:18 “And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.”
Verse 3- David is referring to the other people in the land who are following the Lord.
Exalting Jesus in Psalms 1–50 (The Wise Person Will Run to God and Find Satisfaction (16:1–3)) When we delight in the fellowship of believers, we do not take anything from God’s glory because God has given them to us as a good gift. You are God’s gift to me, and I am God’s gift to you. We are God’s gifts to one another. To delight in God’s people is to take delight in the Lord’s goodness. This is God’s plan for his people. To be practical, there are seven reasons we need other saints:
1. We need the fellowship of God’s good gift.
2. We need the instruction of God’s good gift.
3. We need the accountability of God’s good gift.
4. We need the rebuke of God’s good gift.
5. We need the comfort of God’s good gift.
6. We need the love of God’s good gift.
7. We need the presence of God’s good gift.
The unfaithful follower will seek the world, and find sorrow. V.4- The contrast of the faithful follower.
“Offerings of blood” may refer to the actual drinking of pagan blood sacrifices, either animal or human. It also may be a metaphor for guilt due to the bloodshed of the innocent (Anderson, Psalms, 142–43; Wilson, Psalms, 309). The shedding of the blood of the innocent for any reason will sear the conscience, scar the soul, and increase sorrow and trouble. The gods of this world only offer empty promises. They make promises but never deliver. “David,” as Allen Ross says, “did not recognize the divinity or power of any ‘god’ other than Yahweh” (Psalms 1–41, 404). He would not join them. He would never speak of them.
In your life what do you follow after? Where do you find your protection?
If it comes from anything other than the Lord, what does scripture say will happen?
We have the provisions of the Lord. V. 5-6
The Lord is our sustenance. V.5
What is sustenance?
the maintaining of someone or something in life or existence.
The Lord is our inheritance V.6
We have the presence of the Lord. V. 7-8
The Lord counsels us
The Lord comforts us
We have the promises of the Lord
We experience his peace
We experience his power
We enjoy his presence
Share the gospel.
