Psalm 119:9-24
Psalm 119:9-24
Review the 22 stanza’s 8 lines - don’t know the author - collection of proverbs
Goal as a Christian is to glorify God 1 Cor 10:31
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NASB95)
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
If our desire is to glorify God then we have to find out what He wants from us
Bible - Inerrancy - authority - sufficency
Sufficency - The BFM 2000 says that the Bible is the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried.
Nothing wrong with creeds - they just sumarize what we believe the Bible teaches
Conduct - raises the question, “Are we going to live our life on Biblical principles?”
Psalm 119:9 begins with the question, “How can a young man keep his way pure”?
How would the culture answer that question, supposing the culture really wanted to help a young man?
The temptation for us as Christians is to give the wisdom of the world
Skip verse 10 and we’ll come back to it
End of verse 11 he says, “That I may not sin against you.”
You see he’s still thinking about not sinning against God.
Why does God care if we sin?
What’s the solution to sin in verse 11?
Why doesn’t he just say, “Your word I read”?
Go to verse 21
The psalmist says some wander away from God’s commands
Who is he talking about?
How do we wander away from the Bible?
How do we keep from wandering away from the Bible
I think he answers the question in several of these verses
Verse 10, 14, 20, 24
The way to keep from wandering away from the Bible is to love it (we’ll talk about how to love it in a minute). For now we’ll talk about some general ways we can fall in love with something or someone. (Time together)
I want to be careful and not insert my own wisdom about how to love the Bible. For that reason let’s go to verse 18
I often pray this because my flesh doesn’t want to do the work of reading and studying
My flesh doesn’t love the Bible
The psalmist knows that it takes work to get God’s word inside of us
Verse 12
A clear theme in Psalm 119 is Scripture memory. v11, 15-16, 23
The fruit of Scripture delight is verse 13
