We will be generic, but it will be potentially life changing and powerful.
Do you believe that you can be “friends” with God?
What are the requirements for real friendship?
Not imaginary…spend time with /cultivate / learn each other /
We were drowning and Jesus came to us as a life preserver. We dont’ grab on to him we are dead and at the bottom of hte sea and he grabbed us and gave us mouth to mouth resucetatino and breathed new life into these dead lungs.
Life can be overwhelming
Matthew 14:30 ESV
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Psalm 69:1–3 ESV
1 Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. 3 I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.
V2 - look at the metaphors (waters coming up…i am sinking down in mud)
Metaphorical to literal
V3 - wear with crying out - my voice is gone - have you ever cried that much?
V3 - eyes are growing dim? (puffy eyes - feel like you can’t open them)
Psalm 18:3–4 ESV
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me;
Psalm 18:5–6 ESV
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
Psalm 18:16–19 ESV
16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
This proverb is echoed in the English expression "a friend in need is a friend, indeed." The meaning is that being willing to meet another person's need is a sign of true friendship.
A friend in need is a friend indeed is a proverb that says a true friend is someone who helps you when you are in trouble rather than leaving you to fend for yourself.
Flooded Lakeside Park (fell in the water - Chris Sams) - really probably a life or death situation.
Jesus has proven his friendship to us.
Sometimes we have secret codes and languages that only we know. Part of the relationship that has been cultivated.
Does he see you and hear you seeking and adoring him in the morning. Using the usually verbage. Do you let him know where you are in need?
False and shallow companions don't act like friends, at all, when the relationship might cost them something. When the prodigal son was wasting his inheritance on a raucous lifestyle, he probably had a wide circle of "companions," just in the sense mentioned in this proverb. However, when he was penniless, he "began to be in need" (Luke 15:14). Consequently, he took a lowly job feeding pigs (Luke 15:15). His plight was so bad that he longed to eat what the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything (Luke 15:16). Whatever throng of party mates he might have had before, none of them were there to help when he was in desperate straits.
True friends can be even more loyal than blood family. Although Solomon's observation identifies anyone who is a true friend in time of trouble, the description certainly fits the Lord Jesus. He is the believer's close, true Friend, who promised, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5).
As the Deer - your mind friend and you are my brother even though you are a King.
Proverbs 18:24 ESV
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Hebrews 13:5 ESV
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Meet us in our greatest time of need.

Close relationships with persons that one knows well.
Friendship is a reciprocal relationship characterized by intimacy, faithfulness, trust, unmotivated kindness, and service. The concept can describe one’s relationship with people and with God.
God is with you - read those verses.
Friendship is something that is developed through actions, availabilty, accessabilty (real, authentic transparet relationshp) - we identifed this as one of our core values.
Exodus 33:7–11 (ESV)
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.
John 15:15 ESV
15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
