Recap from Chapter 10

after the plague of darkness (9)
Negotiations broke down and Pharaoh said don’t come back or you will die

Chapter 11

Chapter 11 seems to filled with flashback scenes and summary of what is about to happen
God says this tenth plague will be the last one
tell people to ask Egyptians for silver and gold
Moses warns Pharaoh
firstborn (son) will die, even animals
but not firstborn of Israel
you will beg me to leave

First Passover - Ch. 12

God declared this month would be the first month of the year (new calendar for a new nation)
this will be their new year
this is their independence day
this is their Juneteenth
on the tenth day choose lamb or goat to sacrifice and eat
on the fourteenth day, everyone kill their lamb at twilight
For this night take blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes
roast and eat the meet with bitter herbs and bread without yeast
during the meal, be fully dressed and ready to leave.
that night I will strike down the firstborn, but when I see the blood, I will pass over you
celebrate this every year forever
seven day festival
no yeast in bread
no work except cooking food
is the festival of Unleavened Bread the same as pasover
teach your children this ceremony: Lord struck the Egyptians but spared our families.
The Lord did what he said he would do . . . firstborn died
rough on Pharaoah because they means the heir to the throne died and that could cause all kinds of trouble
Pharaoh tells them to get out (you can have everything you requested), and ask for a blessing
His people felt the same way (we will all die)
Israelites asked for clothing, silver, and gold and the Egyptians gave it. Stripping them of their wealth
600,000 men (2 million people?)
some non-Israelites went with them (Egyptians, just other people living in the area
land had been destroyed, they were the winning side
430 year slavery, God brought them out to the day . . . at night (never paid attention to that before)
evening is considered the beginning of the day
God gave regulations about Passover
no non Israelite unless they convert (circumcision)
no breaking bones

Pointing to Christ

lamb sacrificed - Jesus is the lamb of God
lamb chosen on 10th but not killed to 14th day (lamb would be inspected for blemishes)
Jesus, not killed right away, spent time on earth
he had not blemishes
morally, lifestyle
or in what he taught - always tried to trap him
it happened at night - Jesus taken at night
bread without yeast - body of Jesus without sin
the whole congregation will do it - All of Israel was against him (crucify him)
no bones of the lamb to be broken - none of Jesus legs broken
blood on the door - blood shed on the cross
posted for all to see
body of the lamb and blood of lamb important
eat the lamb, post blood on the door
Communion, body and the blood
they had roast the whole lambto eat all the lamb
we are to take all of Jesus, not pick parts we like
This was a faith thing, got grace through faith (faith to believe the blood of the lamb would save them)
not of good works
their was proof of their belief - blood on the door
The whole thing led to freedom from slavery - faith in Jesus leads to freedom from the slavery of sin
Only Israelites or converts to Judaism could participate in Passover (no circumcision, no passover) - circumcision was sign of the covenant between God and them
no baptism, no communion (baptism is sign of our belief in the new covenant/new testament)
Everything was done under God’s will, Jesus said

Interesting

They left in the evening - they were dressed to leave
We had a Passover like seder at church . . . why no lamb?
No longer possible after the destruction of the 2nd Temple
Jesus foretold this (judgment upon them)
so they just kind of phased it out, because it was not possible to do all of the ritual stuff without a temple
Christians see the final lamb has been sacrificed, no need for other lambs to be sacrificed
Christians see when the temple is rebuilt, the lamb will return, but not to be sacrificed

Lesson: Be on the right side of His-story

God is doing more than you think: We look back and can see this is about God’s redemptive plan for mankind
This whole story is bigger than Moses, Pharaoh, and the children of Israel . . . this leads to the rest of the Old Testament, and the New Testament, it is all about Jesus
That means that God is serious about carrying out His will!
You are part of His-story too! And it is a BIG STORY - so be on the rights side, God’s side. . . . . play the part God has for you
all you have to do is have the faith to obey the voice of the Lord
You can go with God or resist Him
You can run with God or get run over by Him

Lesson: You Reap what you sow

Galatians 6:7 NASB95
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.
Galatians 6:7 NLT
7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.
Egypt tried to kill Israel’s sons - Their sons got killed
You caused Israel to cry - no God causes you to cry
stripped Israelites of their wealth - God stripped Egypt of its wealth
gold, silver, clothes
crops and animals destroyed
