Paul Cowley is a missionary to Nairobi. The conditions there are dreadful, with raw sewage ditches and no running water. In fact, the people in the slums pay 9x more than a rich person for water. Pastor John makes 2.5 dollars a day as a security guard. Public transportation costs 3 dollars a day, so he walks 14 miles to work and 14 back. People in the slums are considered cursed, so no one helps them.
Nairobi is considered a wealthy city, with middle and upper classes hidden behind 18’ concrete walls. Crime is so out of control that the police who work during the day commit armed robbery at night.
Paul Cowley went there as a missionary to bring food, clothing, books, and bibles. The people refused; they said bring us the word of God. Whatever gifts they receive will be taken from them, or they will be killed by gangs.
So, Paul started a discipleship program like ours here at WBChurch, except it is only for Pastors. Most Christian pastors there are not saved; they mix Voodoo with Christ. Most pastors get saved at the discipleship course, and their bishop don’t like it. The other unsaved pastors practice a prosperity ministry and take what little these people have.
The discipleship program turns out 450 saved pastors every year. It is a two-year program, and there are two different classes running.
So, why am I telling you this? I am not collecting money for this ministry. Paul’s ministry reminded me of Christ’s role as the Light of the world and the Bread of Life. Coincidentally, Pastor Delong is going to speak about Christ being the light of the world.
The people in the slums only want the Word of God. Christ said, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness but will have the Light of life.” Paul Cowley brought that light to a dimly lit slum. Filled with poverty, witchcraft, rape, and murder. Does it sound familiar? Kensington, LA, and most cities in the US. We are moving in the direction of Nairobi.
Paul said that at 35, it was really late to start a missionary ministry, but he picked up his torch and brought the Light of Christ to a sin-infested place like Nairobi. By bringing pastors to salvation, they in turn bring to saving knowledge their flock. Christ’s light is causing a fire to spread in the slums, getting brighter each year. The converts receive joy, a quiet delight in their being.
Again, why am I telling you this? If you’re saved, you have the word of God; spreading the word is spreading; Christ’s light it is a duty, a command. Our country is going by way of Nairobi, maybe not today, but look at our cities, the lawlessness, our lawmakers. We have much the same sin and darkness as they do in Nairobi. Gender confusion, rape, murder, robberies, men in girls’ cloths. I don’t have to list them all but were there.
Paul and his wife are two people with the Holy Spirit, saving 450 pastors a year and sending them out to bring salvation to multitudes. That is just two people and the Holy Spirit. It is just as essential for us to share with one person as the 99. Christ has left the flock to come to save you and me.
If the truth sets us free, why do we procrastinate giving freedom to friends and family? Once you get over the initial shock of putting yourself out there, it becomes easier and easier. Just like Paul Cowley, we have a helper called the Holy Spirit to guide us.
Our discipleship program is effective by building on each other. You will receive tools to help you share and mentor others. It will make our Church, a beacon light for the world to see, by sharing Christ.
