TS: Chapter 20 records the appearance of Jesus to his own followers. He doesn’t appear to unbelievers. There would be no point. They hadn’t believed His miracles, they wouldn’t believe His resurrection. They had even gone so far as to accuse Him of working miracles by Satan’s power. I have no doubts that they would either say He wasn’t really dead, or attribute His recovery/resurrection to Satan again. They were blinded by Satan.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
RS: The resurrection of Jesus is like earnest money. He is risen, so we know we can look forward to our resurrection.

Jesus Laid to Rest

Preparing His Body John 19:38-40
John 19:38–40 NKJV
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
Joseph of Arimathea asks for and receives the body of Jesus
Then Joseph and Nicodemus prepare Him for burial
They anoint His body with myrrh and aloes and wrap it in a long linen cloth.
Placing His Body John 19:41-42
John 19:41–42 NKJV
Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
Jesus’ body placed in a new garden tomb where no one has ever laid before.
AP: Grief is real
I’m sure they left the tomb as the guards seal it and stand watch. They walked away in grief and sorrow.
We all experience those down days
from disappointment to major grief, it is natural to have feelings of sadness and grief.
Unlike them, we know that resurrection is real!
It takes a degree of the sting out.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 NKJV
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
The glory of eternity for the believer erases all thought of the suffering of Earth
Romans 8:18 NKJV
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
That doesn’t erase all sorrow, but it changes it.
It gives us a new focus, the finish line of heaven

Jesus Missing

Mary at the tomb
John 20:1–2 NKJV
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
Mary, and other women go to the tomb on the Sunday to finish preparing His body.
Luke 24:1 NKJV
Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
Mary Magdalene had a sordid past. Jesus had delivered her from that and she became a devoted follower. She went to the tomb before sunrise.
They came to finish preparing His body
it had been rushed.
They loved Him and wanted Him to have the process done correctly.
Finding that the tomb was empty, led her to go report to the disciples.
She suspected that His body was taken and hidden by the Jewish leaders.
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary)
Though Jesus had predicted His resurrection numerous times, it was more than she could believe at that point. It would take His showing Himself alive to them by many “convincing proofs” ( Ac 1:3) for them to believe.
Acts 1:3 NKJV
to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Peter and John at the tomb
John 20:3–10 NKJV
Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Peter and John run to the tomb
In a humorous aside, John records that he won the race!
Evidence found:
linen wrappings were still there
Recall Lazarus’ was raised, he hobbled out in his linens.
John 11:44 NKJV
And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
Jesus’ linens remained neat and folded
He was in a glorified state and thus could pass through the linens.
This was not the scene of a grave robbery. If the purpose was to move His body to hide it for some reason (which is illogical) they wouldn’t unwrap and if any fell off, they definitely wouldn’t have taken the time to fold them.
The scene convinced John that Jesus had come back to life.
The disciples had not believed or understood Jesus’ repeated reminders that He would be killed and rise again. Even the OT had foretold and John references that:
Psalm 16:10 NKJV
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
AP: There are days we all have questions
There will be times we will be shell-shocked by what life throws at us.
Mary, Peter, and John had to think yet another blow was landing on them
Not only was Jesus dead, they thought His body was stolen and likely desecrated.
The evidence changed them
We need to hold onto the evidence
We have the Word of God and the weight of church history to aid us
Spend time in it!
Read it, Memorize it, Meditate upon it
We further have the witness of the Holy Spirit with us at all times.

Jesus Not Lost

Three appearances are described in the rest of the chapter
Mary John 20:11-18
Sorrowful one John 20:11
John 20:11 NKJV
But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.
True sorrow shown
The Shining Ones John 20:12-13
John 20:12–13 NKJV
And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
There was no robbery, it was the power of God
Matthew 28:2–3 NKJV
And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
angels deliver the message of resurrection
Mark 16:6 NKJV
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.
The Sovereign One John 20:14-18
John 20:14–18 NKJV
Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ” Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary)
The reason for Mary’s failure to recognize Jesus is uncertain.
She may not have recognized Him because her tears blurred her eyes (v. 11).
Possibly also, the vivid memories of Jesus’ bruised and broken body were still etched in her mind, and Jesus’ resurrection appearance was so dramatically different that she failed to recognize Him.
Perhaps, however, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, she was supernaturally prevented from recognizing Him until He chose for her to do so
At hearing His voice speak her name, she recognized Him
She didn’t want Him to go, “clinging to Him”
But afteer He went to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit (The Helper) to be the abiding presence.
The Ten
The Fearful Ones John 20:19
John 20:19 NKJV
Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Disciples were gathered behind lucked doors out of fear
The Faithful One John 20:19-23
John 20:19–23 NKJV
Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Jesus presented Himself to them
Jesus commissioned therm
John 20:21 NKJV
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
John 17:18 NKJV
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
Thomas
Reluctance of Thomas John 20:24-25
John 20:24–25 NKJV
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
He had been absent
Recognition by Thomas John 20:26-29
John 20:26–29 NKJV
And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Jesus offered Thomas the chance “feel” the evidence
Thomas didn’t need it!

Conc:

John concludes with giving us His purpose: John 20:30-31
John 20:30–31 NKJV
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
All that has been recorded in this gospel was for this point
That we may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God
Through believing we have life in His name.
Hold onto that!
