ESS: We should follow God in obedience.
OSS: [Devotional, Consecrative] {I want the hearers to listen to God’s call and respond in obedience.}
PQ:
What components are in the text?
UW: Components
TS: Let us examine the aspects together now:
The first component is the calling of God to Jonah. [vv. 1-2]
Get up!
Go to Nineveh
Preach the message I tell you
The second component is the response of Jonah. [vv. 3-4]
Jonah Got up
Jonah went to Nineveh!
Jonah proclaimed God’s message to the Ninevites.
Literally, “Cried out and said” (וַיִּקְרָא֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר)
The message was one of destruction— remember, this is because of the wickedness of the Ninevites and their pagan practices.
Response Questions:
[1] Have you considered God’s calling on your life?
First, to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, involving both belief and repentance (Mk. 1:14-15)
Second, to serve through obedience understanding God has saved you for a purpose— not just for Heaven— but to impact the earth for the sake of Heaven while you are here (Eph. 2:10)
[2] If you have considered God’s calling on your life, are you walking in obedience to it— right now?
This requires you to know what God’s specific calling on your life is.
This requires active obedience, not dwelling on past success, faithfulness, or failure.
“God is not concerned about past failure. He is concerned about present faithfulness.” (Unknown)
