God Has A Secret

The Hidden Things Belong to God
Deuteronomy 29:29 KJV 1900
29 The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Introduction
This verse distinguishes between the "secret things" that are God's alone and the revealed truths meant to guide us.
Scriptures to Build a Foundation
1. Job 11:7-8
Job 11:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? 8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
This passage underscores the incomprehensibility of God's mysteries. Reflecting on our limitations in understanding fully God's ways reminds us to trust in Him.
2. Psalms 147:5
Psalm 147:5 KJV 1900
5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: His understanding is infinite.
It reinforces the truth that God's wisdom and understanding surpass our own. Acknowledging this truth teaches us humility and dependence on God.
3. Isaiah 55:8-9
Isaiah 55:8–9 KJV 1900
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your thoughts.
These verses highlight the vast difference between God's perspective and our human perspective, emphasizing the need to trust God, even when we do not understand His ways.
4. Romans 11:33-34
Romans 11:33–34 KJV 1900
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller?
Paul marvels at the complexity and depth of God's wisdom, which is beyond our understanding. This reminds us of the greatness and sovereignty of God.
5. Matthew 13:11
Matthew 13:11 KJV 1900
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Jesus teaches that understanding the truths of God's kingdom is a gift given to His followers, contrasting the "hidden" aspects with what is revealed to us.
6. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
1 Corinthians 2:9–10 KJV 1900
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
The concept of God having secrets, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 29:29, "...The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law," teaches us several profound truths about our identity and relationship with God.
1. Limited Understanding
First and foremost, it acknowledges the limitations of our understanding compared to God's omniscience. We are finite beings, unable to grasp the entirety of divine wisdom and the mysteries of the universe. This humbles us, reminding us that despite our quest for knowledge and understanding, there will always be aspects of God's will and creation that are beyond our comprehension.
2. Trust and Dependency
Knowing that God has secrets that He chooses not to reveal also encourages a deeper trust in Him. It's a recognition that we must rely on God's wisdom and sovereignty, trusting that He knows what's best for us even when we can't see the full picture. This dependency strengthens our faith, as we learn to walk in obedience and trust, rather than sight and understanding.
3. A Call to Obedience
The latter part of Deuteronomy 29:29 shifts focus to what has been revealed to us, underscoring our responsibility to adhere to God's teachings and instructions. It implies that while we may not understand everything about God and His plans, we have been given enough knowledge through Scripture to live a life that honors Him. This calls us to focus on practicing what has been revealed through God's Word, rather than becoming preoccupied with the mysteries beyond our reach.
4. Relationship over Knowledge
The fact that God has chosen to keep certain things secret also suggests that our relationship with Him is not based on intellectual knowledge alone but on faith, love, and obedience. It’s a reminder that while seeking understanding is valuable, cultivating a personal relationship with God is paramount. This relationship is not just about acquiring information but about growing in love, trust, and communion with God.
5. Identity as God’s Children
The secrets of God teach us about our identity as His children. Just as parents keep certain things hidden from their children for their good or because they are not yet ready to understand, so does our Heavenly Father with us. This parental aspect of God’s nature reassures us of His care, love, and protective oversight over our lives.
The secrets of God highlight our limited understanding and dependency on Him, call us to obedience, and encourage us to focus on our relationship with Him rather than on the acquisition of knowledge alone. This drives home the importance of living by faith and recognizing our identity as children of God, who are cared for, loved, and guided by a sovereign and loving Father.
Amos 3:7 reads: "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets."
1. Communication with His People: This passage underscoresa the fact that God communicates with His people. He does not act in isolation but involves His servants in His divine plans. It implies a relationship that is based on communication and trust.
2. The Role of Prophets: Prophets have a special place in God’s communication strategy. They are the chosen channels through which God reveals His plans and purposes to humanity. This elevates the role of prophecy and positions it as an essential element in the understanding of God’s will.
3. God's Sovereignty and Omnipotence: God does nothing without a purpose or plan. This verse, while highlighting His communicative nature, also reaffirms His sovereignty. Every action He takes is part of a divine plan, known fully only to Him until He decides to reveal it.
4. The Value of Revelation: It also emphasizes the value of divine revelation. What God chooses to reveal is critical for the guidance and instruction of His people. It is through these revelations that followers can align themselves with God's will and purpose.
5. Trust in God: Implicit in this verse is the call to trust in God’s wisdom and timing. God reveals His secrets according to His perfect wisdom and understanding of what we need and when we need it.
6. The Mystery of God: The verse also touches upon the mystery that surrounds God. While He reveals His plans to His prophets, there is an understanding that not everything is revealed. There is an element of mystery that remains with God, highlighting His transcendence and our finite understanding.
What must we do for God to reveal His secret?
The role of prophets in the Bible is critical, especially when it comes to the revelation of God's secret things. God chose prophets to communicate His will, plans, and secrets to His people. Prophets are essential conduits through which God shares His insights and intentions.
There are three levels of the prophetic:
The Spirit of Prophecy- As we worship, the Spirit of prophecy can manifest and anyone can yield and speak the word of the Lord in edification, exhortation and comfort and are limited to the testimony of Jesus.
The Gift of Prophecy- Utterances from the Spirit are stronger when operating in this gift. Because it’s a gift, it can be stirred up.
The Office of the Prophet- The prophet has the grace to speak beyond edification, exhortation and comfort into future events.
What must we do to operate in the prophetic?
1. Maintain Righteousness and Holiness
Prophets were expected to lead lives of holiness and righteousness. They had to be set apart for God’s work, dedicating themselves to Him entirely. Holiness was a prerequisite for them to stand in God's presence and receive revelations from Him.
2. Obedience
God required absolute obedience from His prophets. They needed to follow His commands without hesitation, even when those commands were challenging or didn’t make sense to them. This obedience often involved delivering difficult messages or performing symbolic acts that demonstrated God’s message to the people.
3. Cultivate a Close Relationship with God
Prophets spent significant time in prayer, worship, and fasting to draw closer to God. This close relationship was crucial for them to hear from God accurately and interpret His messages correctly.
4. Endure Suffering and Persecution
Many prophets faced persecution and suffering because of the messages they delivered. Their commitment to God meant they would stand firm, even in the face of opposition, ridicule, or physical harm. This perseverance showed their dedication and faithfulness to God's calling.
5. Being a Willing Vessel
Prophets had to be willing to be used by God, however He saw fit. This meant they often had to set aside their own desires, plans, and even their reputation to fulfill God's purposes. Their lives were not their own; they were instruments for God’s use.
6. Vigilant and Watchful
Prophets were tasked with being watchful over the people and situations around them. They needed to be perceptive and sensitive to the movements of God and the needs of the community, ready to speak or act according to God's timing.
7. Seeking God’s Wisdom and Understanding
Prophets needed to seek God’s wisdom and understanding continually. They could not rely solely on their intellect but needed the divine insight that comes from God to interpret visions, dreams, and sometimes cryptic messages successfully.
God revealed His secrets to prophets because they were prepared to receive, keep, and faithfully communicate those secrets according to His will. Their lives exemplify commitment, obedience, and faithfulness to God, despite personal cost. Through their example, we learn the importance of developing a deep, personal relationship with God to understand His will and purposes for our lives.
Application
Humility in Seeking Wisdom
Recognizing that some things are beyond our understanding encourages us to approach God and His Word with humility, seeking His wisdom rather than relying solely on our own understanding.
Trust During Uncertainty
When we encounter situations or circumstances that are difficult to understand, Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us to trust in God's sovereign plan, knowing that He holds the future in His hands. His plan will be revealed by His prophets. When the prophets speak, it is like the sound of a trumpet. Everyone will say the same th
Commitment to God's Revealed Word
While some things remain a mystery, God has revealed what we need for salvation and godly living through Scripture. Let's commit to studying and obeying God's Word, which is revealed to us and our children.
Prayer for Revelation
We should actively pray for the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds and hearts, revealing to us the depth of God's love and the mysteries of His kingdom as we study His Word and seek His face.
Conclusion
Deuteronomy 29:29 teaches us about the sovereignty of God over the hidden and the revealed. As we navigate the complexities of life and faith, let us hold on to the revealed truths of Scripture while trusting in the infinite wisdom and goodness of God for the mysteries we cannot understand. May we grow in faith, trust, and obedience as we delve into the depth of God's Word together.
