The Preacher and the Doer

Nehemiah 8:6 KJV 1900
6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
Matthew 13:23 KJV 1900
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
James 1:22–25 KJV 1900
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Acts 2:37 KJV 1900
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

I. God sends us His Word! It’s the preachers job is to DECLARE the Word!

A. The Word of God is alive and powerful!

Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

1. The Word of God knows how to discern between your actions and what you actually have in your mind and in your heart!

B. The preacher must be ready and attentive to the voice of God. For at any moment God will begin to speak to him.

2 Timothy 4:2 KJV 1900
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

1. It is imperative to notice and understand that according to the Scripture a small part of the preachers job is to be an encouragement and make you feel good about yourself.

2. The bulk of the preachers job is to ensure that you are pointed in the right direction so you can make it to heaven! This can ONLY be done in accordance with the Scripture!

i. In the original the word reprove means: ἐλέγχω (elenchō). vb. to reprove, to convict. Generally connotes judging for the purpose of reformation rather than condemnation.

Jeremiah K. Garrett, “Justice,” ed. Douglas Mangum et al., Lexham Theological Wordbook, Lexham Bible Reference Series (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2014).

ii. In the original the word rebuke means: ἐπιτιμάω (epitimaō). vb. to rebuke. Primarily refers to the action of corrective rebuke.

Michael Scott Robertson, “Discipline,” ed. Douglas Mangum et al., Lexham Theological Wordbook, Lexham Bible Reference Series (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2014).

iii. παρακαλέω (parakaleō): vb.; ≡ DBLHebr 5714; Str 3870; TDNT 5.773—1. LN 33.168 ask for earnestly, beg, plead (Ac 28:20), for another interp, see below; 2. LN 33.315 invite (Lk 8:41); 3. LN 33.310 call together to (Ac 28:20), for another interp, see above; 4. LN 25.150 encourage, console, urge (Eph 6:22)

2 Timothy 3:16–17 KJV 1900
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

C. God holds His ministers accountable to Him!

James 3:1 KJV 1900
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

1. God holds the preacher to a standard that will receive greater condemnation!

Ezekiel 3:17–18 KJV 1900
17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

2. The preacher MUST give the warning that God places in his mouth!

i. If God sends a judgement and the preacher does not proclaim it, not only does the to whom judgement was to be warned die in his sin, but the preacher must pay for that as well!

3. The preacher must not only pray, but he must study to ensure that he is in alignment with the Word of God!

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV 1900
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

4. In order for the preacher to be blameless he must proclaim the WHOLE counsel of God!

Acts 20:26–27 KJV 1900
26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

5. Preachers are watching for your souls and every word we say will be used against us in the day of judgement!

Matthew 12:36–37 KJV 1900
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

6. The Scripture teaches us that leaders, including preachers, are those who WATCH for your souls and must give an account to God!

Hebrews 13:17 KJV 1900
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

II. Your response to the call of God and the proclaimed Word of God is imperative!

A. The direction of the church is declared through the preacher and his obedience to the leading of the Spirit, but the response of the people determines whether we make it to where God wants the church to be!

Matthew 13:23 KJV 1900
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

1. In order for your to bear ANY fruit for the kingdom of God you will need to be able to hear and nurture the seed of the Word of God!

2. To nurture the seed means you do more that just hear the Word, you do something about the Word you heard!

i. The Scripture plainly teaches that those who hear the Word and do nothing about it WILL NOT make it to heaven!

Matthew 7:15–27 KJV 1900
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

ii. James tells if we hear the Word and do nothing about what the Word told us we are like a man who looked in a mirror, walked away, and did nothing about what he saw in the mirror.

B. When the preacher and the people come together in a service great and powerful things begin to transpire!

1. Peter preached the Word of God revealing that Salvation was now available to all of them!

Acts 2:14 KJV 1900
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

ii. When he finished preaching the people responded!

Acts 2:37 KJV 1900
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

iii. Due to their response to the Word of God preached by Peter 3000 people were filled with the Holy Ghost!

Acts 2:41 KJV 1900
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

C. When we come together in the preached Word of God, the preacher preaching, the people responding, then our hearts begin to sync up in rhythm with the Holy Ghost and with one another.

1. At that moment the PERFECT will of God can be done!

2. Ultimate faith can be reached during those moments!

3. A response with faith was and is always followed by an outpouring and infilling of the Holy Ghost!

4. During times like this is when you can find your breakthrough!

D. During preaching is when we typically will be opposed by the enemy!

1. The reason this happens is because the enemy knows that when there is a disconnect between the pulpit and the pew, God’s will CANNOT be accomplished!

2. When the enemy resists we press harder TOGETHER!

3. You may sit here and say, “I’m not resisting the preacher, or I’m not resisting the Word of God.”

i. However, you can be “passively” opposing by not be involved in what God is trying to do.

ii. There must be anointing in the pulpit AND the pew!

iii. When its time to respond it TIME TO RESPOND with faith and determination!

E. We only need one person to respond. We only need a single catalyst!

1. Do we have a single individual today that will step out?

2. Will you be the one that moves to the call of the Holy Ghost today?

3. You say you want to be used by God! Will you move and respond in faith and see how God can use you!?
