What do Christians mean by faith?
If the Lord is good, why do bad things happen?
[Storm & Climate Change Slide]
Psalm 29 ESV
A Psalm of David. Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
Israel claimed it was their Lord and no other who controlled the storm.
Psalm 29:9 ESV
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
Isaiah 45:7 ESV
I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things.
Israel claimed to hear “the voice of the Lord” in both good and bad circumstances.
Mark 4:35–36 ESV
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.
Treating Jesus as Lord is easier when we feel in control of our lives.
Mark 4:37 ESV
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
We think the Lord is not in control when we feel like we are not in control.
Mark 4:38 ESV
But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
When we think the Lord is not in control, we also think he does not care.
Mark 4:39 ESV
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
The Lord is in control, and the Lord does care.
Mark 4:40 ESV
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
Faith is trust in the Lord during the storm.
Mark 4:41 ESV
And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
The storm shows us more about the Lord than we ever knew.
