We all are familiar with the story of Cain. He was the first recorded murderer Bible.
I like the story of Cain before its a microcosm of humanity.
He just didn’t kill anyone but he killed his brother, but not only a brother but a brother who was considered to be righteous.
Why did Cain kill his brother? Cain became jealous because Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice to God. Hebrews 11:4.
1 John 3:12 NKJV
not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
The jealousy was the basis of Cains anger then it turned into rage.
BTW anger is a secondary emotion. Theres usually something that causes one to be angry. In Cain case it was jealousy.
God ask Cain a series of questions, “why are you angry?” “Why has your countenance fallen? if you do well, will you not be accepted?”
These series of question God chose do Cain can reflect on whats taken place. God seen the anger and the direction Cain was headed in but Cain didn’t see it.
“where is your brother Abel?” and “what have you done?”
God told Cain the voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
-What was Abel’s blood crying out vengeance, justice, judgement, retaliation, consequence, sentencing.
Hebrews 12:24 NKJV
to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Christ blood speaks better things then that of Abel. He blood says mercy grace forgiveness, restored, reconciled.
Genesis 4:15 NKJV
And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
The “mark of Cain” - Mark also means the sign of Cain .
We don’t know the exact nature of the sign and where it was on Cains body.
One Jewish tradition pointed to Cain himself as the “sign” or make who served to admonish others to repentance.
In one sense this is true because the man Cain has been token of sin’s fruit and divine retribution (punishment of a criminal act).
Jude 11 NKJV
Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.
1 John 3:12 NKJV
not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
When we think of Cain we should see how far the heart could go if left unrepented.
But the Mark wasn’t a sign of Judgement but actually a sign of protection
Lets go back to the text Gen 4:15. “so that no one who found him would kill him” (v. 15). “Mark” in our passage is not a sign of the “curse”; in fact, it assures Cain’s safety rather than acts as a reproach.
Genesis 4:16 NKJV
Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.
Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in Nod. Nod literally means “wandering”.
And God sentence Cain to a life of ceaseless wandering
This is symbolic because Cain became a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth.
Sometimes in our lives we can be wanderers. We can be going through life aimlessly trying to find a way.
Sin can cause us to wander.
With sin we can be quite distant from God.
The prodigal son after he sinned against his father he is said he went off to a far country he became a wander.
Psalm 56:8 NKJV
You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?
See God doesn’t count your sin He paid for your sin at the cross. They have been nailed with a sure nail. Your sins will not find you ever again it has been finished at the cross.
But He does count the wandering steps of the believer.
He doesn’t glance at the steps or merely look at them but he counts them.
The steps that alienate us from God He’s counting them.
Genesis 4:17 NKJV
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.
Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch. The father building a city and naming it after his son.
Cain built his life on prosperity. Its like Cain rebelled against God and he is winning in life.
Genesis 4:18 NKJV
To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
So Lamech is in the 7th position from Great Great great great grandfather.
Genesis 4:19 NKJV
Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
So Lamech was the first polygamist. He altered the plan of God for just having one wife.
But he made some great advances in urban living.
Genesis 4:20 (NKJV)
And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
Jabal was a master at breeding animals .
Genesis 4:21 (NKJV)
His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.
Jubal produced musical instruments harp and flute.
He produced civilized arts.
Genesis 4:22 (NKJV)
And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
Tubal- Cain- He made tools out of bronze and iron. to make life convient and comfortable.
Like Congratulations Cain you are father of the century!
You produced an amazing family! You produced wealth, prosperity, city’s, a strong economy.
Genesis 4:23 NKJV
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.
Lamech didn’t just kill one man but 2!
See Cain handed down maybe a skill, a trade, maybe a hard work ethic, but what he didn’t hand down was a walk with God.
A calling out to God.
A reverence for the only thing that can sustain and refrain a soul.
Cain just produced someone who is twice and evil as himself.
Lamech had twice as many wives and twice as many homicides.
No only that buy Lamech boasted about these killings and the pride was out of this world.
So here is a picture of an affluent society defying God and His laws, seeking pleasure and self-indulgence.
Genesis 4:25–26 NKJV
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.
But what was known of Seth and Enosh was that they began to call on the name of the Lord.
Call means they “proclaimed” the name of the Lord. and through Seth later Noah came on the seen.
A man who found grace in the eyes of The Lord.
