Last night/our theme for the week:
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
Tonight is going to be “different.” We’re going to take a 75,000 foot view of the “Law.”
Explain “Torah” // Pentateuch (5 part book). One author // to be read as a whole.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Bereshit // “in the beginning” // by means of the firstborn Son
The Son of God is Creator // giver (source) of life
Genesis 3
Disobedience/Sin/Death — they are cut off from the tree of life.
Covering of nakedness/shame
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
There will be “enmity” (deep rooted hatred) between the serpent and the woman—there will be an “offspring” (singular) that will bruise (break/crush) his head.
So…by Genesis 3, we’ve got themes that will run throughout the Pentateuch, the Old Testament, the whole Bible.
death, life, nakedness, covering, land, a tree, sin—all around this offspring (seed) that will crush the head of the serpent.
The covering of nakedness, the restoration of life, bringing back to the tree (restored fellowship/relationship with God)//the good land, the undoing of death, the crushing of the serpent’s head—all accomplished/fulfilled by the “seed.”
Adam’s sons — Cain, Abel, Seth
Moses begins to focus in on the line of Seth.

When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.”
Sin & wickedness spreads/deeper.
Is this the offspring? He will bring rest.

Leads the people of God (the family) through the waters of the Red Sea.

Wilderness — temptation/sin/wandering
LEVITICUS
The central message is that God is holy and he requires his people to be holy. The book also shows that God graciously provides atonement for sin through the shedding of blood.
