Out of all the people in your life, who do you think you are most similar to and why?

We all are all a disciple or follower of something or someone, intentionally or unintentionally. Whether that be our dads, pastors, older wise men, Joe Rogan.Whether that be the culture through social media, ourselves in always pursuing what we want to do, or simply laziness.
Following Jesus is very similar except on a much larger and grand scale. Here are the 3 steps to being a follower of Jesus, an Apprentice of Jesus will
Be With Jesus
Become Like Jesus
Do as He Did
This word disciple makes sense for us as Christians, but I would still say we have softened the word and lowered the expectation, but what does the bible say?
Tonight, we focus on the importance of not just being with Jesus and spending time with Him, but seeing a heart, spirit, and totally new self.
Ephesians 4:22–24 ESV
22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

How to become?

To Become Like Someone or something, will happen intentionally or unintentionally. What you will notice in life, if you are not intentional, you will still become like something. Elias, has been very intentional with changing his eating habits and has lost 40 pounds. If we are unintentional, we will naturally get heavier and unhealthier. During Covid i was around the same weight i’m at now but just fatter and you could see it in my face and my stomach. I had to be intentional.
Through Habits
1. If you spend a lot of time practicing and playing for football, you become a better and better football player. They are intentional.
2. The Espinozas just got back on a trip and it shocks me how fast they are, but all three are extremely excellent runners. Andrew did a half marathon with his dad, and Andrew finished the race before his dad. What I love from this example is two things, you see this runner mentality that started and stemmed from their dad. But as runners, the more they run, the more they embrace the title of truly being a runner.
3. If you spend a lot of time studying or reading, you should notice your mind shift and think differently. As a musician, I went and studied at Las Positas college and had the cross roads of either becoming a piano player or a singer, I spent the first year learning piano and practicing and deciding to be that but in all honesty, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as singing. And over those 4 years, I trained my voice to be better, to be able to understand it, and to one day be able to teach it.
4. Reading, working out, to prayer, reading your bible.
Psalm 1:2–3 ESV
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Pastor Bill has this great quote that resonates with me “We often overestimate what we can do in a short period of time, but underestimate what we can do in a long period of time”
Through Relationships
You become with who you hang out. The longer you are with those people, you become like them. Last week, two times in my lesson I couldn’t figure out the word and Berkley just knew what I was thinking. It was like she was in my mind. Think of your best friends and think of similarities. Interests, hobbies, personality.
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Through Your Thoughts
You become often what you are thinking. What are you thinking about? What do you find your mind racing to? We just watched Inside Out 2 and I really enjoyed it but it showcases something that I think is so important for all of us. These thoughts are transforming you and influencing you whether you realize it or not.
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Philippians 4:8–9 ESV
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Become Like Jesus

Being with Jesus should now stem into something more though. An apprentice isn’t just with their master and that is it. An apprentice starts to become like their master, day by day. Being with Jesus will and should lead you to a change of heart in becoming more like Jesus, becoming more holy. The process of sanctification.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
1 Peter 1:16 (ESV)
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Ephesians 4:24 ESV
24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Specifically think of this as character qualities. Next one will go into more actions, responsibilities, etc.

Breakout Groups

1. Go around in a circle and think of the daily habits you do, the people you hang out with, the games you play, what do you find yourself becoming intentionally or not? What do you find yourself thinking about? What emotions do you normally emulate? (Give your own examples and read some verses together)
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
2. What is the world like? What is the life before Jesus or without Jesus represent? What does it desire? Think of our own life and what you see similar.
1 John 2:15–16 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Titus 3:3 ESV
3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
3. Who is Jesus Like?
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
John 13:1 ESV
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
