Call to Worship - Psalm 147
1 Praise Yah! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming. 2 Yahweh builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts of Israel. 3 He is the One who heals the brokenhearted And who binds up their wounds, 4 Who counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.
5 Great is our Lord and abundant in power; His discernment is infinite. 6 Yahweh helps up the afflicted; He brings down the wicked to the ground. 7 Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving; Sing praises to our God on the lyre. 8 He is the One who covers the heavens with clouds, The One who provides rain for the earth, The One who makes grass to sprout on the mountains,
9 Who gives to the animal its food, And to the young ravens which call out. 10 He does not delight in the might of the horse; He does not take pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 Yahweh is pleased with those who fear Him, Those who wait for His lovingkindness. 12 Laud Yahweh, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He strengthened the bars of your gates; He blessed your sons within you. 14 He is the One who sets peace in your borders, He satisfies you with the finest of the wheat, 15 The One who sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly, 16 The One who gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes,
17 Who casts forth His ice as fragments; Who can stand before His cold? 18 He sends forth His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow and so the waters flow, 19 Who declares His words to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel. 20 He has not done so with any nation; So as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise Yah!
Scripture Reading: Titus 2
1 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may instruct the young women in sensibility: to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be slandered.
6 Likewise urge the younger men to be sensible; 7 in all things show yourself to be a model of good works, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in word which is irreproachable, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. 9 Urge slaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing, not contradicting, 10 not pilfering, but demonstrating all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in everything.
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good works. 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
Romans 1:17 - Only a Righteousness given by God can produce the Righteousness of God
self righteousness, works righteousness, imputed righteousness
(1) The central theme of the entire Book of Romans is “righteousness”
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous will live by faith.”
To understand this verse is to understand all of Romans, all of the Bible, to understand the perfect holiness of God, to understand our need of salvation, to understand why we cannot earn our way to heaven, to understand our need for a Savior
In this verse is the OT promise of
4 “Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith.
Paul uses this verse in three places: two epistles and a sermon that became Hebrews and in each book he takes one element of the righteous will live by faith
Romans 1:17 - the righteous - which focuses on justification - the declaration of righteousness by God to the guilty sinner
Gal 3:11 - will live - how to live in true righteousness
and Heb 10:38 - by faith - the OT saints were by grace though faith
1.1 What is righteousness?
literally - equity, justice, integrity.
If to sin means to miss the mark, righteousness is the opposite, it refers to conformity to a standard
to do right, to be made right - the two sides of a balanced scale are “righteous”
When we stand on the scale of sinlessness, holiness, and perfect obedience and Christ is on the other side of the scale - what is the verdict - unrighteous
It is the righteousness OF GOD
1.2 How does God reveal His righteous standard?
32 and although they know the righteous requirement of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
God places within our hearts a natural law
1.3 How does God rate our righteousness on a scale of 1-10?
10 as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one;
(2) The gospel reveals the righteousness of God
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous will live by faith.”
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
The first 16 verses of chapter one center on the gospel, the saving, transforming, life giving, Christ centered gospel that is the power of God for salvation. But the gospel, Paul tellus,
(3) It is a righteousness that is by faith
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous will live by faith.”
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
This gift is received by faith. We are saved by faith, we are to live by faith. Every part of our lives is to be lived by faith, we are to trust the Lord by faith in his promises throughout our entire lives.
(4) It is a righteousness that is eternal and practical
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous will live by faith.”
10 for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.
17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
(5) It is an imputed righteousness
20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Pharisees, set apart ones, the most spiritual, the most righteous
48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
The active and passive obedience of Christ
Now the God of Peace who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep in the blood of an eternal covenant, even our Lord Jesus. May He equip you with everything good in order to do His will, doing in us what pleases Him. Glory is His into the ages and the ages. Amen.
