Tonight we are having our second I believe, brotherhood meeting for the record. I will be getting others to teach on our brotherhood meeting nights, but we will also be engaging in some curriculum which I ordered early today. So next time or time after that, Lord willing, we will be getting into some guided curriculum so that we won’t aimlessly be all over the place and just randomly going from topic to topic.
Tonight’s topic is about brotherhood. We have what we call is a “Brotherhood Meeting” where the men of the church come together to talk about topics that are needful to us. In these meetings, we will talk about men issues, marriage issues, single issues, church issues, maybe political issues, and life issues. All of it will be centered around God and the word of God.
The purpose for the brotherhood is not just to have another church service, but for fellowship, friendship, discipleship, and growth.
Let’s jump right in:
The word “brotherhood” is found only twice in scripture.
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Examples of how not to treat our brothers:
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Then in the next verse Cain wants to start crying about his punishment. If you ever watch shows like 48 Hours or crime shows, it is amazing how people act when they get caught.
Don’t sit there and throw a pity party because you did something you wasn’t suppose to do, and now you’re paying the price for it. But even in Cain’s sins, God still has mercy on Cain….HE DID NOT HAVE TO DO IT.
How does God extent mercy towards Cain? He puts a seal on him or a mark (verse 15) and that whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. Then the scripture says “lest any finding him should kill him.” Because once murder is committed it sets off a chain of events.
The Bible doesn’t say this in particular….but if you read between the lines, someone was going to have in their mind to revenge the death of Able. Could have been a family member, could have been a friend.
Totally separate from tonight’s teaching but something to consider.
****Important note**** we have to note, that the time frame of old doesn’t line up with our time frame. By adding up the number of the ages of the generation after Seth we have a total of 7,626. The Bible says Noah was 500 years old when he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
So here is an interesting question. Yall know I like to analyze and deep think scripture and meditate on it. If Shem, Ham, and Japheth was born to Noah when Noah was 500, does this suggest that they were triplets? Hmmm? Something to think about.
Another thing to think about is this, it seems that each one of Seth’s descendants had only 1 child. So is one child born, or do each descendant have multiple children….the bible just chooses to zero in on certain individuals for the sake of bible narrative?
Yall not ready man…..this is some deep thinking stuff. Think of it like this…..come on…..there is no law then. There is nothing in writing and God has not told given them prohibition on how many wives they can have and how many children they can have.
And let’s be real and honest in here…if you are sexually active and there are no restrictions……you only gonna have one kid?
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
There was no restrictions……every type or sort of evil you can imagine was happening at this time. Sin was rampant!
And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
It is scary to think, that we are heading back towards a time like this. WE ARE NOT NO WHERE CLOSE TO IT….BUT WE ARE TIPPING TOWARDS IT FOR SURE!
Pastor why are you saying this…..because if someone comes at you with scientific proof that man has been here longer than what scripture declares….how you gonna fight and defend your faith. Yes there are times in which you walk away, but there are also times that you have to stand up for and fight….otherwise people will lose their faith and stop believing the scriptures. It is called Apologetics.
I’m not one, to let someone back me in a corner and debate me or dictate to me their unbelief to try to get me to not believe or question my faith. Naw….we bought to duke it out. I’m about to share my faith with you, because maybe…..just maybe I can sway you in the right direction. That’s why a lot of times atheist avoid me.
Okay….I’m sorry…..I can get off track very easy because I don’t see singular stuff. I see the Bible as a whole….God has given me the ability to connect things throughout the Bible and not just stick with one thing. Let’s deal with this one scripture and then close.
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
4 commandments that Peter gives us in this verse. But you must understand that this one verse is just a portion of an overall text.
The main text is from verses 13-20 which deals with Honoring Authority.
First thing we must understand is that Peter is telling the brotherhood “Honor all men”. Whether you agree with them or not! Whether they are right or wrong! Whether they are good or evil. Peter did not say “Honor some men” or “Honor worthy men”, but he says “Honor ALL men”
That is a tough pill to swallow for some men. Because a lot of times we wanna walk in the flesh and we don’t want to honor people because they don’t think like we think, they don’t believe like we believe, they don’t look like we look, they don’t dress like we dress. But the scriptures says “Honor all men”…..we have to honor one another.
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.
We need to understand what true honor is first:
honor which belongs or is shown to one: the honor of one who outranks others, pre-eminence.
the honor which one has by reason of the rank and state of the office which he holds
Why does Peter say “Honor all men?”
Look at verse 13:
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
We must submit…..whether we like it or not…..LORD HELP US! To the King or President in our case, to governors…..Imma say this and some of yall not going to like it. You vote along party lines…..I’ve been a democrat all my life…..but I got to say that Youngkin is a good governor…..I would vote for him to be re-elected because he has done some good things in our state….and a lot of it has benefited the churches in our state. I don’t care for (policy wise or moral wise) either presidential candidate. Both are immoral, especially Trump….he is wicked. But we still have to honor him…..uuuuggghhhh…..cause our flesh don’t want to…..come on brothers. Don’t care for Biden and the policies he has passed…..but still have to honor him.
Peter says “You have to do it for the Lord’s sake. Submit to all human authority. Now…..if he is saying this about people outside the church…..THEN WHAT ABOUT IN THE CHURCH!?!?!?
The reason why Peter writes this, is because we are to live a blameless life…..you can’t live a godly life and you’re rebellious, you can’t live a godly life and you’re speaking evil all the time of others. It gives ungodly people occassion to make accusation against you and it makes the church (the body of Christ look bad) AND THAT IS WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS POLITICAL MESS IN THIS COUNTRY…..IT IS MAKING THE CHURCH LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF FOOLS!!!
Evangelicals are TRUMP, TRUMP, TRUMP, NOW TRUMP IS TRYING TO CORRAL THE BLACK PEOPLE…..AND SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE SAYING “YOU KNOW HE HAS DONE MORE FOR US THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT”. Oh you’re saying that because you got a check every month from that guy, and he approved of us having a national holiday called “Juneteenth” but I still remember the riots. I still remember all the deaths and how the racists felt empowered while he was in office. I remember him telling the police officers turn up the heat on us, and wanted to use the national guard against blacks who were protesting the unfair treatment and deaths of blacks by the hands of policemen. But now we wanna get amnesia.
I said all that to say, even though we may not like or agree, we still have to honor them and show them respect. For the Lord’s sake.
Peter then addresses an issue that many black brothers have a problem with that seem to think that the Bible approves of slavery. Verse 16 says
As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
Just because you are free doesn’t mean you get to do what you want to do. That seems to be a problem over here in America…..Land of the Free….Home of the Brave.
Thank God we are free….our ancestors came over in ships. We are free men. But we are still servants or slaves to God. Peter says don’t use your supposed freedom as an excuse to do evil or live in sin.
SO THE FOUR THINGS WE MUST DO:
Honor everyone……whether you agree with them or not.
Love the brotherhood. (Read 1 Cor 13:4-7) Read in NLT.
Fear God.
Honor the King
