Mark 4:35–41 ESV
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Proposition
Today we will be looking at this passage in light of discipleship. I propose to you that discipleship is possible with trust and belief in who Jesus is. We must believe that Jesus is in the Boat.
Introduction/Explanation

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.

Jesus had just come away from teaching an all day long conference on the principles of the Kingdom of God and he was tired. He was going across the water to the other side and as many as could got in their boats to follow Him, they were still hungry for more. He promptly fell asleep in the stern (the back) of the boat.
I.- Storms Will come 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling
e John 16:33 “33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.””
A- nature of them Ephesians 6:12 “12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
catch us off guard often when we least expect them…when we are asleep, unaware
arose-came into existense quick, storm- violent attack, furious, throwing everything topsy turvy, wind-violent agitation, great-intense and large
wave-bursting, toppling...a rogue wave, beat-seized as a prisone
B, How they try to drown us
Lowest /deepest part of us
stern- lowest part, where the bilge would be! sinks first..so had most water
Bilge is where the water of those storms collect
comes from every crack and every bit that the scuppers of a boat does not drain off a boat.
3997 The wise man in the storm prays to God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear. It is the storm within which endangers him, not the storm without.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (American Essayist)
we can feel like we are sinking, drowning
bilge pump not working, all we have tried, we are bailing and no progress
Create Doubt
How could Jesus sleep in the water and wind?
Does he even care that we feel like we are dying?
asleep- to be dead, to be indifferent
Same way he went after Eve in the garden, create doubt and then twist God’s word
English Standard Version Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?”
II.Jesus Power/Just One Word
39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of
arise- wake fully, stir up
rebuked- charge sharply, admonish, awarded the penalty, to censure
wind-violent agitation, strong chaotic
said-speak, command
peace- involuntary stillness
be still-close the mouth with a muzzle, reduce to silence, be kept in check
ceased-grow wear or tired of violence and raging
great- large and spacious, intense powerfully affecting the senses
calm- tranquil
3.Conclusion
What is our Response? 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Trust-
Are we afraid- timid, fearful
What are we holding in our hand, wearing, possession of, holding fast
He is who he says He is-
have conviction of truth, and trust that he is who he says he is
instead of fear and being seized with alarm we will be struck with amazement and reverence
therefor we must consider who is present…Jesus is in the Boat!
Be a Disciple-
..”if the oceans go where you send them so will I!”
obey- listen, harken, submit to
Him- Him!!!!!!! The One
who holds all power in the palm of his hand
whole holds the keys to death and hell
who is the first, the last, the one who was and is and is to come
Call to Come
invitation of being delivered from drowning in your storm
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mk 4:35-41
