INTRO:
The Holy Spirit is the 3rd PERSON of the “Trinity” or Godhead
The Holy Spirit is a “Him” not an “IT” He is one of three persons in the Godhead.
The term "Trinity" or "persons" as related to the Godhead, is not found in the Scriptures, but are words that line up with Scripture,
Jesus taught that there was a distinction of Persons in the Godhead and used specific terms like, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
The Father is the Begetter (Father, Architect), the Son is the Begotten (only born, Foreman) , and the Holy Spirit is the one proceeding from the Father and the Son (represented by the contractors building the house, manifester of creation).
Three persons in the Godhead all in a state of unity.
Neither Person in the Godhead exists or works separately or independently of the others.
ILLUSTRATION:
Father, Son, Holy Spirit
Water can be illustrated in the form (H2O) but 3 different characteristics or functions: Solid (ICE), Liquid (WATER), or gas (CLOUD)
The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of God.
We see the Holy Spirit…
Carrying out the spoken Word “Let there be…”
He was the Breath of life into mankind,

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS SEEN OVER 100 TIMES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT STARTING IN GENESIS
2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Lexham Theological Wordbook (Concept Summary)
In Hebrew, rûah can refer to the wind, the breath of a living being, or the spirit as the living essence of a creature
3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”
The Spirit is concerned with righteousness and judgement
As seen in Acts
38 So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?”
3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.
Spirit came upon Bezalel with special skills enabling him to craft items for the temple
17 I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone.
Spirit came upon 70 leaders to help ease Moses burden leading Israel
This also implies that it was the Spirit empowering Moses all along
12 One day the Lord said to Moses, “Climb one of the mountains east of the river, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel.
13 After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron,
14 for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
15 Then Moses said to the Lord,
16 “O Lord, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.
17 Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the Lord will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 The Lord replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
Disobedience and death will not stop the plan of God.
The Spirit acts as the Divine agent who continues to move the plan of God forward by anointing people in their place
34 Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power. He blew a ram’s horn as a call to arms, and the men of the clan of Abiezer came to him.
Spirit of God came upon Gideon to give him the victory
6 At that moment the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn’t tell his father or mother about it.
14 As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists.
Samson has more experiences of the Spirit recorded than other figure in the OT.
6 At that time the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person.
7 After these signs take place, do what must be done, for God is with you.
8 Then go down to Gilgal ahead of me. I will join you there to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. You must wait for seven days until I arrive and give you further instructions.”
9 As Saul turned and started to leave, God gave him a new heart, and all Samuel’s signs were fulfilled that day.
10 When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw a group of prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy.
11 When those who knew Saul heard about it, they exclaimed, “What? Is even Saul a prophet? How did the son of Kish become a prophet?”
The Spirit of the LORD changes us
13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

THE HOLY SPIRIT PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH
6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.
Lexham Theological Wordbook Concept Summary
The Greek word pneuma can also mean “wind, breath, spirit,” but in the New Testament the meaning “spirit” predominates
34 For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.
24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Gives us the ability to worship the way we need to…in spirit and truth.
Worship must not be designed to please the unbeliever or the believer. Worship must be designed to please God. - R.C. Sproul
38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”
39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.
Jesus was dependent upon the Holy Spirit
“The Father” Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. So the HS was technically His Father.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
Another Advocate (Helper)
Greek word is Parakletos
Para - express the close nature of the relationship I have to my wife.
“kaleo, means “to beckon or to call.”
Two Greek words together, is saying that the Holy Spirit is “permanently called closely alongside each of us to provide coaching, direction, instruction, and counsel in our life journey”
The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to live victorious lives; living in the truth
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
9 And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”
32 We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.”
51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!
12 The Holy Spirit told me to go with them and not to worry that they were Gentiles. These six brothers here accompanied me, and we soon entered the home of the man who had sent for us.
28 One of them named Agabus stood up in one of the meetings and predicted by the Spirit that a great famine was coming upon the entire Roman world. (This was fulfilled during the reign of Claudius.)
4 So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit. They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus.
28 “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few requirements:
6 Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.
7 Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there.
5 And after Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul spent all his time preaching the word. He testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
21 Afterward Paul felt compelled by the Spirit to go over to Macedonia and Achaia before going to Jerusalem. “And after that,” he said, “I must go on to Rome!”
23 except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead.
28 “So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood—over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.
22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
THE HOLY SPIRIT DESIRES A VITAL ROLE IN THE CHURCH TODAY
The Holy Spirit is rarely mentioned today in conversation or churches
“There is virtually no Christian life without the Holy Spirit.” - John Bevere
Remove the Holy Spirit from a church and it will end up a social justice movement with a form of godliness but no power.
There is no peace without Him.
There is no freedom without the Holy Spirit.
For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
The Spirit is everywhere (Omnipresent) so how do we have evil?
Wherever the SPIRIT IS LORD
“The Holy Spirit is not permitted to be in authority in most bars, prisons, hospitals, or homes, and even in many churches”
