The Woes of Legalism
The Woes of Legalism
V 37-38
Jesus has been invited to a Pharisee’s house for lunch
the Pharisee could not believe that Jesus did nor ceremonially wash His hands
they are supposed to take a egg shell worth of water to pour over the hands
and allow them to drip dry
this was a custom of the elders
this was not in God’s Levitical law
this was added later
V 39- 54
over and over Jesus is going to give woes to these men for being religious on the outside
and corrupt on the inside
they have many rituals to show how pious they are
all of the false religions in the world are very religious on the outside
many in the christian church have false fronts to hide their corrupt heart
they make rules that if you call yourself a Christian you have to abide by
I was listening to a sermon by a Baptist. the preacher said that he was bored one day and was reading a dictionary. he found the wood collate and the definition said loose pants. well that was the last time his wife wore them because women don’t wear pants.
outward appearances is what they strive for
I’m a Christian so this is how I act and look like
I’m a Jehovah W so this is how I act and look like
I,m a Buddhist and this is how I act and look like Ect.
Jesus parable of the wheat and the tares
there are people sitting in the pews every week
they have put on a good outer appearance
unless you look real close
Jesus said they will be in the church
they will be Sunday School teachers
Pastors Elder or deacons
they are Hypocrites
a person who is an actor on a stage pretending that they are someone that they are not
WE are looking at Regeneration this morning
what does it look like ?
what happens to us when we are born again?
what is the change?
Before Regeneration
Before Regeneration
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it; for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Adam ate from the tree and died in his trespasses and sins
we are born dead spiritually
Ephesians 2:1–3 (LSB)
And you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience,
among whom we all also formerly conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
people who walk according to satan
people who are dead in trespasses and sins
“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
“And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light lest his deeds be exposed.
they hate the light
they hate God
as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one;
There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;
All have turned aside, together they have become worthless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”
“Their throat is an open tomb, With their tongues they keep deceiving,” “The poison of asps is under their lips”;
“Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
“Their feet are swift to shed blood,
Destruction and misery are in their paths,
And the path of peace they have not known.”
they don’t seek God
they hate God
there is nothing spiritually good in them
they are dead
so something spiritually has to happen to them
there has to be a change in their desires
this is called
Regeneration
Regeneration
Or as Jesus told Nicodemus “ you must be born again”
you must be made alive
And you being dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive with Him, having graciously forgiven us all our transgressions.
you must be a new creation
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
not just a moral reformation
there has to be a change to our disposition
Lets take two brothers one good one bad
same mother and father. same upbringing
the good one has a disposition that is good which causes him to steer to doing good
the other has an evil disposition which causes him to steer to doing evil
I own a bicycle but i do not have an disposition to get up early every morning to ride 27 miles
you look at other people their likes and dislikes what they do how they do it
and compare them with you you see the difference in dispositions
Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones has given me a great illustration to show what I mean. Take the case of the apostle Paul. Look at him as Saul of Tarsus. There is no question about his ability, nor about his understanding, nor about his will power. There is no question about his memory. His faculties are there and are clear and outstanding; he has always been a remarkable man. But there he is, persecuting the Church, regarding the Son of God as a blasphemer, and he goes down to Damascus, ‘breathing out threatenings and slaughter’, using all his powers to exterminate the Christian Church. But look at him later, preaching the gospel as it has never been preached before or since, with the same powers, the same abilities, the same personality, the same everything, but moving in exactly the opposite direction. What has changed? It is not the faculties of Paul’s soul — they are still the same: the same vehemence, the same logic, the same thoroughness, the same readiness to risk all, out and out, he is the same man, obviously. And yet the whole direction, the whole bent, the whole outlook has changed. He is a different man. What has happened to him? He has a new disposition.
Effectual calling and regeneration
what drives our will, our thinking, our goals, our behavior changes
If i had to conform/ reform to a cyclist way of life I could do it but I would never like it.
for a whole summer I rode culminating with a trip to Machias
then I parked the bike
Our minds after regeneration now go in a different direction
our wills now want to hear the word of God
our wills now want to pray and be in communion wit the Father
our new desires are now wanting to read the word of God
we now hate the sin we used to love
we don’t have a new mind or will but what pushes them has changed
For me to have a cyclist mind there has to be a change in my disposition I can pretend all I want
this is what Jesus is telling the scribes and Pharisees
But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness.
Being Christ like is not a self reformation
it is a Spirit changing life
have you had a Spirit changing life or are you a fake
Jesus is warning these people of their hippocracy
warning them that woe’s are coming to them if they don’t repent and believe
