1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (KJV 1900)
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Title: Dinner and a Show
Purpose: highlight true wisdom, address proper use of the body, introduce sexual ethics, proper use of spritual freedom and spiritual gifts.
Theme: the cross is the height of Gods wisdom and love, sacrificial love is the foundation of ALL right action and the end to which all action should be directed
Five core issues Paul dealt with:
Disunity/division (chapters 1-4)
Sex (chapters 5-7)
Food (chapters 8-10)
The Gathering (chapters 11-14)
The Resurrection (chapter 15)
Chapters 8-10: Food
Meat was scarce and expensive.
But on certain holiday where great sacrifices would be made to idols, then the meat would then be taken and cooked and even the poorest could afford it because there was so much of it…
Libertines, who believed nothing mattered, would purchase the meat…
BUT look at 1Cor6.11
1 Corinthians 6:11 (KJV 1900)
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
He had just described the conduct of idol worshippers… and said such were some of you!
How could this affect the church?
How would this apply to today?
Orchata drink - thought it was alcoholic
Culture issues - what is ok in one culture is not ok in other cultures
Brotherly Kindness:
Romans 12:10 (KJV 1900)
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
Philippians 2:3 (KJV 1900)
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
How things affect your brother should be a greater concern then what you want, desire or prefer!
Chapters 11-14: The Church Service (Show)
Church service problems…
What we call church today is very different then what it was 2,000 years ago.
Synagogue still today is very different then what we experience when we come to church.
Synagogue then and now could actually be very confusing and distracting.
This confusion and distraction in the local church is dealt with in 1 Cor. 12 and 1 Tim 2. and James 1.
The principle is that everyone must work together to do everything they can NOT to distract anyone from their focus on God!
Here is what was taking place:
Ppl would burst into tongues
Various ppl would try to interpret
Someone would testify
Someone else would get impatient and try to take over
Someone would want to share a dream, a word, correction
ALL WHILE THE SINGERS ARE TYING TO SING AND THE PASTOR IS TRYING TO PREACH!
Paul teaches a principal here: if you have to do all this stuff you love yourself more than your brother and the gospel has not worked in your life!
It was CHAOS!
Everyone has to do what the can to limit the chaos!
Here’s how to limit the chaos.
Stop running in and out.
Station usher at hall door
If you have to get up, be inconspicuous
Use restroom BEFORE church
Take kids to the restroom before service
Sunday school preparations begin Saturday night
Baths, iron cloths, good nights sleep, GOOD BREAKFAST
STOP FEEDING THE KIDS SUGAR
Make sure you know what is expected of your children
Look for things out of place, dirty
Privatize coming to the House of God!
Don’t stand in the way of sinners!
Don’t be intimidated by guests!
Everything we do MUST be viewed through the context of how does this affect my brother and sister?
What are you going to do to make sure that their are NO distractions in the church service?
