Jesus is Better than Moses (Hebrews 3:1-6)
Play man. We can't sing about that enough. That it is paid in full and are all sufficient Merit is in Christ. What a glorious thoughts today. We're going to be looking at Hebrews chapter 3. And before I jump into Hebrews chapter 3 I did want to mention I was so grateful of those of you who had the opportunity to come out and join us last Saturday at the Gathering at Benicia Lutheran. It was a really sweet time looking at God the father and our fatherhood and I know that they videotaped it and put it up on YouTube. I don't know the link, but I suppose if you search Benicia Lutheran and in my name, you might find it, but let's turn over to Hebrews chapter 3. and I want to begin by just reflecting on Moses for a moment. I know that Moses is very familiar to us those of us who've grown up in church wheat we hear it stories of Moses from the time were a child and and there's a reason because he's one of the greatest men who ever lived. We don't often think about Moses that way because so often we think about the New Testament being superior to the Old Testament perhaps or that, you know Moses. Yes. He did all of those things in the Old Testament and gave us the law. But Jesus is so much better. In fact, the title of the sermon is Jesus is better than Moses. But what I want to begin with is a reflection on the greatness of Moses. Jesus is better than Moses. Not because Moses was a failure Moses was a man greatly used by God. He faced Pharaoh, for example, the leader of the most powerful Kingdom on Earth of the day, and he went into the presence of pharaoh, and he basically told Pharaoh this slavery system that the Israelites are under which is your economy. We want you to let them go. We want you to destroy your economy. So that Israel could go free. And he brought down through the power of God the 10 plagues on to Egypt demonstrating the greatness of Yahweh over. Egypt and all of Egypt's gods and then when Pharaoh chased him with his armies, he led the people through the Red Sea remember he held up his arms and after a while people had to help him hold up his arms. He became the leader the king of Israel the founder think about our founding fathers in America. We think of how great Abraham Lincoln is or or or George Washington or or some of those founding fathers, I guess Abraham Lincoln's not a founding father. I was thinking presidents in my head but founding fathers George Washington Benjamin Franklin all of these men who helped start our country and how much we learn about them and think how great they are Moses. Is this one who Founded and established Israel. Now course God is the one doing it through Moses. But Moses is this king of Israel this leader this Prophet this priest and he led them for forty years in the wilderness. He gave them the law. He gave them God's law. So in the baker encyclopedia, here's this great little quote about Moses focused in this one person are the figures of prophet priest lawgiver judge intercessor Shepherd Miracle Worker and founder of a Nation to Moses is one of the greatest men who ever lived. And to understand the book of Hebrews we have to keep a bookmark in the Old Testament as I mentioned before so I know I said turn to Hebrews chapter 3, but actually I want you to turn back to the Book of Numbers chapter 12, and I want to start with this encounter between Moses and his siblings.
In Numbers Chapter 12 Miriam Moses's sister. And Aaron Moses is brother opposed him because he had married a cushite woman and that's in verse one. And then they're there beef they had with him in verse to they said has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses as he not spoken through us also and the Lord heard it now. The man Moses was very Meek more than all people who are on the face of the Earth what a statement recorded in scripture and and we know that that Moses wrote this and so this is just this reality of the inspiration of scripture in Moses telling the truth. What is imagine? I don't know who Could That Be set up. I mean like the the the meekest man on the face of the Earth more than all the people who are in the face of the Earth. So the Lord rebuke Miriam and Aaron and then this is what I want you to see in verse 6 the Lord said hear my words if there is a prophet among you I am I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision I speak with him in a dream. So if you're a prophet in the Old Testament, the way you received this prophecy is through either a vision or dream a waking Vision or a sleeping dream. That's how God speaks. But then he says I'm 47 not so with my servant Moses. He's faithful in all my house. With him, I speak mouth-to-mouth face-to-face clearly not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. He sees God. What why did were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? And so in this context of God defending Moses's character, we learn a couple things about Moses and his greatness. He's the weakest man on the face of the Earth and God speaks with him face-to-face. He's not just a prophet. He's a priest and a king in and so what Moses ends up saying a little bit later in the book of Deuteronomy 18 Verse 15 Moses knew that his ministry was temporary that he wasn't the Messiah. He says in Deuteronomy 18 verse 15
the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you from your brother's it is to him. You shall listen now. There's an incredibly important verse in the Old Testament particularly in the book of Hebrews because prior to the coming of Jesus who were the people of God supposed to listen to Moses. Moses gave the law Moses gave the scripture who did the people listen to Moses why he was the one who was faithful in all the house of God. He was the prophet priest king founder of the one who God used to deliver his people establish them as a nation and give them the law and Moses himself says in Deuteronomy 18. There's coming a future Prophet just like me. So just like me means all of those things. We just said were true of Moses or going to be true of this future profit and Moses says when he comes you don't listen to me anymore. You listen to him. And so this is one of those Old Testament passages. That's clearly pointing to Jesus. There's coming a prophet like Moses who's going to give us a new covenant and bring in a new Temple in a new sacrificial system and a new priesthood and a new king and a new community and the book of Hebrews is going to compare and contrast the old and the new for the rest of the book. And Moses himself as a prophet of God spoke and said this one's coming and when he comes you don't listen to me anymore you listen to him. He's better than me. He has more Glory than me. He's the one is going to stablish. Well one more little spot in the pentateuch in Deuteronomy chapter 32. You have the song of Moses at the end of Deuteronomy. And if you read through the first five books of the Bible, you have all of the story in the history, but when you get to the Poetry like songs that we see hear the song of Moses or the song of Miriam. If you get to any poetry, those are interpreting the story passages and all of the Poetry points to Jesus. I wish I could preach you my whole series on the pentateuch real quick so I can catch you up but I just going to show you this one in Deuteronomy 32, you might have the beginning of your chapter is titled the song of Moses. And so this is poetry and Moses. It says in 31 30 spoke the words of the song until they were finished in the ears of all the Assembly of Israel and I want you to focus on verse for The Rock. The Rock his work is perfect for all his ways are Justice a god of faithfulness and without an equity just an upright is he know what he says the rock? He's not talking about Dwayne Johnson. He's talking about God who is a rock of Cornerstone a firm foundation of the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians that the rock that led them in the wilderness was Christ. And so what Moses is singing about here is not merely God the Father though. We can say God the father is a rock but Moses is talking about this one who led them in the wilderness and at the end of the pentateuch, he's singing about this rock this one that led them for forty years. And Paul tells us The Rock was Christ. So most of the singing about this future one to come this Messiah who's a rock and he repeats the word rock over and over for example verse 31 their Rock his enemies. It's not as our Rock. Our enemies are actually by themselves. They don't have a rock. We have a rock ok. That's just to catch us up with what the author of Hebrews is thinking about when he writes chapter 3, so let's turn over to Hebrews chapter 3.
Hebrews chapter 3 we're just going to cover verses 1 to 6 today. I debated over getting into the second warning passage, but that would take us all the way down to verse 19 and I I think I want to split it up into two messages so versus 126 there for Holy Brothers you who share and a Heavenly calling consider Jesus the Apostle and high priest of our confession who was faithful to him appointed him just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. There's a quote from numbers 12 Moses was faithful in all God's house verse 34. Jesus has been counted worthy of more Glory than Moses has much more glorious. The Builder of a house has more honor than the house itself for every house is built by someone, but the Builder of all things is God now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant. To testify to the things that were to be spoken later. And we heard about that in some of those prophecies. But Christ is Faithful over God's house as a son and we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in Our Hope. So we have 6 vs here. The whole point of it is the author of Hebrews is saying that Jesus is better than Moses. He has more Glory than Moses. Remember most was it said in Deuteronomy? 18:15. God is going to raise up a prophet like me from among your brethren. It's to him. You should listen and this is the same point. The author of Hebrews is making he made it in chapters one and two, who are we to listen to while at the very beginning Hebrews 11 and to God spoke at various times various ways in times past to our fathers through the prophets, but in these last days, he's spoken to us in his son. So do we listen to we listen to the son he is better than the Angels now the Angels were the messengers of the old Covenant who brought God's word to the people. So maybe we think we should listen to the angels but the odds are Hebrews has no Jesus is better than the Angels he made the angels and so we don't listen to angels. We listen to the Sun. Now he's saying what about Moses the one who gave us the old Covenant who gave us the word of God do we listen to him know now that Jesus is come we listen to the sun. That's why the command In this passage is considered Jesus verse 2 I'm sorry, first one consider Jesus. That's the command before us today the exhortation. What are we to be doing today from this passage were to consider Jesus. Now, what are we to consider? He's going to talk about this but that Deuteronomy 18:15. Do you remember Peter not the first sermon at Pentecost but the second sermon when he's in Solomon's Portico, he actually says Xanax three that that Prophet passage that that Moses preached is about Jesus and Jesus spoke of himself as a prophet over and over again. In fact in John 6:14, we're told that the people who saw the Miracles that Jesus did began to say this is indeed the prophet who is coming into the world. So what is the author of Hebrews doing here to for his people? Remember? This is a sermon on Psalm 110. We think about it. We have to kind of keep thinking about it as one big sermon that would have been preached at one time. He goes back to the life of Moses and in chapter 3 he's going to bring up the Wilderness experience. And I think what he's trying to do is the the audience of Hebrews the author is likening their experience to the experience of the Wilderness generation. We're going to see that in the second warning that he says don't be like Israel who hardened their hearts, but as it is called today come to Jesus. Perhaps you think about that Wilderness experience some of them were succumbing to Temptation. Let's go back to Egypt. Let's not worship. God the the way he prescribes let's not go to the Tabernacle. Let's set up our own goat Idols in Leviticus 18 and worship right outside our house rather than having to walk through the camp over to where the Tabernacle is. Some of them were very shallow Believers in the promises of God somewhere unbelieving all together and here in the book of Hebrews. There are five warning passages. And I think the author of Hebrews in this preaching he's giving these exhortations In These Warnings to to call us to bring to mind. Who are we listening to what voice are we listening to because in the wilderness is real wanted to listen to so many other voices besides the voice of Moses. The one who was God's Prophet that they built the golden calf cuz they listened to other voices. An errand listen to other voices and you listen to voice of the people that I don't know. I threw the gold in and out popped the calf. I don't know how it happened.
So this the same application here as we think about our lives in the suffering we're going through in the the sorrow that we experienced just this week. I heard of more need for prayer because of suffering and sorrow and sickness and thin. And so what we need is we need something like a rock to lead us through the Wilderness of this life and to get us safely home to the promised land. me Jesus and the boys we need to listen to is not the voices of the world. It's the voice of our savior reminding us was true reminding us that he's on his throne. Cuz remember this is a sermon on Psalm 110. The Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet. So the author of Hebrews has Psalm 110 in mind. What is Jesus doing now? He's seated at the right hand of the father ruling and reigning with the greatest Authority and interceding is our high priest. And so we need to consider him. We don't need to listen to other voices. And the voice in versus 126 that some of these people were tempted to listen to wish to go back to the voice of Moses. And listen to what the old Covenant said. The author of Hebrews is going to say. Hey what's growing old is getting ready to fade away. Don't listen to that anymore. Listen to Jesus.
The exhortation and verses 12 to Simply consider Jesus verse one. He's the high priest whom God sent there for Holy Brothers and Sisters You Who sharing a Heavenly calling considered Jesus the Apostle and high priest of our confession when he says holy Brethren, holy brothers and sisters. He's addressing the audience. He's preaching to and the author switches from the Wii that have been using in chapters 1 and 2 to the you when addressing the church with the sermon at Emma and he goes back to we here very quickly and so in my mind looking at it, he's really saying listen up Church. Pay attention you need to consider Jesus. You need to be thinking about what he's saying and what he's telling you and what he's teaching you in the hope that lies in him. We'll get to that in verse 6. But he reminds them before he says consider Jesus brothers and sisters. You have a Heavenly calling you share in this heavenly calling and I think that's connected to Psalm 110. Where is Jesus at the right hand of the Father in heaven where we going to be with Jesus to be in the presence of the father. This is the calling that we've received. In fact in chapter 12 verses 22 to 24 turn over there real quick. I want you to see this connection at the end of the sermon the end of the book.
He says Versa 18 you've not come to what may be touched a blazing fire and darkness and Gloom in a tempest in the sound of a trumpet in a voice whose words made to hear is beg that no further messages be spoken to them. That's Sinai. That's the old Covenant. That's what Moses came to And beat indeed it was so terrifying verse 21 was the side of Moses Moses said I tremble with fear. So even Moses was afraid coming into the presence of God at cyanide a 22, where have we come to you have come to Mount Zion to the city of the Living God the heavenly Jerusalem and to innumerable angels and festive Gathering to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven into God the judge of all and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect and to Jesus the mediator of a New Covenant into the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Why do you pick the blood of Abel Abel was the first one killed the first martyr as it were who gave God the best of his first fruits and worship God and was killed for it by his brother came because Cain was jealous. And that's the first Blood spilled in the Book of Genesis the book of Moses. And the author says oh is as great as that incident was the blood of Jesus is he's not just a martyr. He's our mediator. He's our savior. He's our high priest and he has a new covenant with better guarantees. And so he's going to bring you safely to God you have a Heavenly calling in Jesus is going to get you there. That's good news. That's what we need to hear today in the midst of our suffering in our sorrow Arc Wilderness wanderings that we experience. and so he says this is who were to consider is Jesus the Apostle and high priest of our confession Apostle is the Greek word for sent one in one of the the main teaching points of Jesus ministry is that he was sent by God the Father to do his will Moses was also sent by God you remember that Moses sees this Burning Bush You think I got to go check this out? That's not normal. Any as he approaches God first rebukes and it says get your sandals off. It's Holy Ground Moses approaches. And what does God do God calls Moses and commissions Moses and tells him to go tell pharaoh to let my people go that they may go out into the Wilderness and worship me. Jesus was sent by God as well. And so this first comparison is the one sent by God is Not Moses now, it's Jesus now and he's the Apostle to send one and he's the one sent to be a high priest which connects back to 2:17. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God to make propitiation for the sins of the people. This high priest Jesus if we consider him what he had already said is he's the one who destroyed him who has the power of death. That is the devil and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. We've been freed from the penalty of sin. We're being freed from the power of sin and there is coming a day when will be freed from the presence of sin forever. Jesus is accomplishing that as our high priest. And so this is who were to consider and what does this consideration mean? That means as we reflect and remember on this it causes us to have great hope and confidence. All of God's promises are yes, and amen and what do we need more than anything in the midst of our sorrow in our suffering in our sin, we need great confidence in a savior who's going to do what he said he would do was going to bring us to God and make all things right and make all things new. That's the Glorious. Hope Nevers to Begins the comparison as we consider Jesus. Jesus was faithful to him who appointed in that is the father and that's like a dumb moment. If you read the gospels, he's he's always does the father's well. He always speaks the father's words, and he always does the father's works. And the one time when he in the garden and he says father let this cup pass from me yet. Not my will but your will be done is the height of it.
And this is what calls to mind in the author of Hebrews. Oh, Jesus was faithful in all his house just like Moses was faithful in all his house numbers 12 the one God spoke to face to face.
a reference that we saw earlier Turn over to Hebrews 11. We get a little more of a biography of Moses in Hebrews 11 beginning and verse 23. By faith Moses when he was born was hidden for 3 months by his parents because they saw that the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king's edict by faith Moses when he was grown up refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt for he was looking to the reward now, it appears that the author of Hebrews in that he sang Moses because he was at the adopted son of Pharaoh's daughter that perhaps he was in line to be pharaoh and inherit the Egyptian Kingdom. And we've seen that some historians have potentially argue this even The Prince of Egypt cartoon back in the day argue this so that I don't know that that's, you know reliable, but it's a great movie. So Moses what the author of Hebrews says his Moses was the son of Pharaoh's daughter. So even if he wasn't going to be Pharaoh himself, he was going to be incredibly powerful in the most powerful Nation on Earth and he says I consider the reproach of Christ the Messiah. Of Greater reward than all the riches of Egypt he goes on by faith. He left Egypt verse 27 not being afraid of the anger of the king for he and board as seen him who is Invisible by faith. He kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood so that the destroyer of the first born might not touch them by faith. The people crossed the Red Sea is on dry land but the Egyptians when they attempted to do the same weird round now Moses was faithful in all his house numbers 12 And how did he exhibit his faithfulness by his faith by believing God isn't that incredible so that this secret as if it were to being faithful is to have faith. I know that sounds a little bit Elementary but isn't that the heart of faithfulness the heart of endurance and perseverance and not giving up is believing that the end result is worth it believing that the promises are true believing that the reward is worth it. It's why the author of Hebrews in chapter 12 is going to say run the race with endurance looking to Jesus the author and Perfecter of your faith who for the joy set before him endure the cross despising the shame and I sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Don't lose heart. Don't lose heart. Consider Jesus, that's what the author is saying here. Moses was faithful in all his house. He's one of the greatest men who ever lived and so the basis of the exhortation inverses 326 to consider Jesus. He's going to give you now a reason why you should stop considering the greatness and the glory of Moses in the word given through him and consider the glory of Jesus in the word given through him verse 3 back in Hebrews chapter 34. Jesus has been counted worthy of more Glory than Moses as much more Glory as the Builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. So like any good sermon he wants to bring it home by using an illustration for he said, Jesus is better than Moses. He has more Glory than Moses. Let me give you an illustration think about a house what has more Glory the house or the one who built it will Jesus. The assertion the author is going to prove is that Jesus is the one who built the house and so he has more Glory than the house itself. A builder is greater than the house he builds. I was brainstorming with my family yesterday afternoon for an illustration of this myself. I got to one-up the author of Hebrews and have my own illustration. So we were deciding as a family sort of group deciding what would be the best example of this? Well, the Burj Khalifa the tallest building on the planet right now, it was designed for Renown. I didn't know this my wife told me this the whole reason it was built she had seen information on this. I don't know if it was a show or whatever but the whole reason it was built was for Glory and renowned the United Arab Emirates was trying to make do by a tourist Hub. Not just known for the oil industry. And so they built the tallest building in the world 2722 ft nearly half a mile 160 floors High. It was built in five years. It was named after a former president of the United Arab Emirates. Now that former president he gets some Glory because his name is on the building. It's the Burj Khalifa and the president the Sheikh was Khalifa. Now we would argue he got his name on the building cuz he was a former president, but there's someone more glorious than the president the shake it is the designer. Now the design firm was Skidmore Owings & Merrill of Chicago who had designed the Sears Tower that's pretty good credentials, and they designed the One World Trade Center. Pretty amazing and the Chief Architect. I didn't know his name Adrian Smith. So who deserves the glory for that Burj Khalifa? Adrian Smith and his team who designed it there the they're the ones who designed it. We could also then go to the contractors who built it. Now it is said several World Records. It was meant to put Dubai on the map with something Sensational and it has If it's quite remarkable everything they built over there. Now, I don't know how successful it is, but it's put their name on the map. I mean Successful financially viable long-term, but it for in terms of renown and Glory. It's there now how much more he's going to say in verse for the author of Hebrews every house is built by someone, but the Builder of all things is God. So we could take the Burj Khalifa. That's the tallest building on the planet, but guess who Trump's him. God made the universe. Reminds me of the old Brian Regan joke when he was at a party and people were talking about, you know their cars driving on the Autobahn and you said imagine being one of the you know, what's his name Buzz Aldrin who landed on the moon you get to Trump? Everybody doesn't matter that you were driving on the Autobahn he could just simply walk up and say I walked on the moon. Had the glory well here. This is what the author of Hebrews are saying. Is he saying you get the illustration the Builder the architect and designer they have more Glory than the house itself and oh, by the way, the Builder of all things is God.
This explanatory comment in verse for connects us back to 2:10. It was fitting that he but the father for whom and by whom all things exist in bringing many sons to Glory should make the founder of their salvation the captain of their salvation perfect through suffering. So the author of Hebrews is thinking about the builder of the house is not Moses. It's Jesus Moses is in the house. Yeah, he founded the nation but he's in the house of God. He's not over the house of God. Who's the one over the house of God Jesus? Why because he built it. Oh and by the way in chapter 1 he is gone. He's the exact representation of his nature. He upholds all things by the word of his power. So first floor is Jesus trump card that guess what he didn't just build the house of God, he built the whole universe because he's God He's a little bit better than Moses. Jesus is not only in the house, but he's over the house now Bruce 5 now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that work to be spoken later Moses does deserve Glory and Honor Moses is one of the greatest men who ever lived but Moses is not the house. He's a resident in the house the things that Moses testified about her the things we looked at in the introduction the sending of another Prophet the sending of the Messiah that the father was going to do to him you'll listen and we could run through all of the Old Testament promises where there's a descendant of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Judah and David and he is going to build the house of God. 1st Chronicles 17 and it's going to last forever now. It's a bruise has all those promises in mind and the ends with verse 6. Christ is Faithful over God's house as a son to Moses as faithful as a servant verse five Christ is faithful as a son. That brings us back to Psalm 110 that he's preaching on the Lord said to my Lord you are my son. I'm sorry that song to Psalm 110 that he did quote that earlier today. I'll be gotten you that brings us back to chapter one. That's the connection I wanted to make but it's tied just on 110 the Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet. So Christ is not only a servant. He's a son. He's God. He's not just a resident. He's the architect. He's the designer. He's the Builder. He's the Creator he's ruling and reigning as king of kings and Lord of lords and he's interceding for us as high priest over this house. Now, this connects us back to chapter 2 11 and 12 because he says in verse 6, we are in his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence in our boasting in Our Hope and back in Chapter 2 11 and 12. He said for He Who sanctifies and those who are Sanctified so Jesus and us all have one source. That's why he's not ashamed to call them brothers saying I will tell if your name to my brothers in the midst of the congregation. I will sing your praise Jesus became like us
He became incarnate and he died for us and he was buried in Rose again. So that he would be a faithful high priest over this house so that he would save us and bring us to God now the application in the wilderness of this Fallen world that were living in the what we need to to think about as we consider Jesus. The author of Hebrews says in verse 6 is we hold fast our confidence and we hold fast are boasting in Our Hope. What does he mean by that? This is what keeps us persevering and enduring until we're in the Heavenly Kingdom and a notice he switched back to we we hold fast our confidence. So the author is including himself in this reminder. So holding fast our confidence as we consider Jesus. It connects to that first warning passage of 2:1-4. Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we've heard lest. We drift away from it for since the message declared By Angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or Disobedience received a just retribution. How should we escape if we neglect such a great salvation. It was first declared To Us by the Lord. It was a tested to those to those who hurt by it butchered that it was attested To Us by those who heard well God bore Witness by signs and wonders in various Miracles and Gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will And it's anticipating this seconds warning this going to we're going to look at next week 7 to 19. But look at verse 14 of chapter 3, we've come to share in Christ's if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. There's that word confidence again. Parecis a boldness. What is the author saying keep a tight grip on the Christian faith because it's our confidence. In fact, he has started in verse one that Jesus is the Apostle and high priest of our confession and that confession is not us confessing our sins. It's the confession that Jesus is Lord It's the common confession. We have as a people of God. And that confidence than in verse 6 is holding fast our confidence holding fast our confidence in this confession. Keep a tight grip on the truths of the Christian faith. Keep a trach tight grip on the gospel. In other words, keep a tight grip on Jesus consider him and and that word confidence. The author is going to bring up as I said over and over chapter 4 chapter 10. This is the confidence to go into the very presence of God whenever you want and tell him what you need and you find grace and mercy to help in your time of need because your father in Heaven and Christ is our high priest. That's our confidence that will never put us to shame that will never disappoint us and then he says the boasting in Our Hope. What are we boasting in glorying in? You see in the wilderness wandering is Israel. They wanted to boast in glory and how much better it was back in Egypt. Fact there's a clever little Veggie Tales song about it. I remember from when Gavin was little
There's this idea that Israel was boasting in glorying in everything else. But God who was delivering them and we saw the numbers 12, even Miriam and Aaron the siblings of Moses were boasting in the fact that they were prophets and has got only spoken through Moses, but we are to boast not in ourselves or in our accomplishments or in anything else in this world. We are to boast in our hope. Well, what is Our Hope? What God has done for us in Christ Our Hope is the Forgiveness of sins the propitiation that Jesus made back in 2:17 as our merciful and faithful high priest. It's everything he's going to talk about in the rest of the book that Jesus is a better sacrifice. He's a better priest. He's a better Temple. He brings true forgiveness. He brings true cleansing of conscience. He's able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to him because he always lives to intercede for them. And so we are going to have confidence and boast or glory in Our Hope in Jesus. That's going to be our most. That's what we saying about in all sufficient Merit. That's our hope is that Jesus did it all it's finished. It's done. Jesus is the new and better Moses fulfilling Moses's Ministry at Sinai in the wilderness and he can lead us to overcome our own Wilderness wanderings our sufferings in our sorrow and our sin. one final thought We are called a priesthood of Believers now because we're in Jesus the book of Hebrews talks about that. Then we are a kingdom of priests Book of Revelation talks about that Peter talks about that and what we see because of this New Covenant reality all of us have a quote prophetic ministry as it were to encourage one another to be a priesthood of one another to hold fast our confidence in Christ and to boast or glory in Our Hope which is found in Christ alone. I can numbers 1129 just a chapter right before Moses. His siblings create all that trouble Moses cries out. I wish that all the Lord's people were Prophets. Quite an amazing statement that the spirit of God would cause all of God's people to be prophets. Will Joel to 28 and 29 Jesus the Messiah brings in this New Covenant Ministries that we saw in the Minor Prophets that all of your sons and daughters will prophesy and dream dreams. And then Peter in the book of Acts chapter 2 says that prophecy is fulfilled at the birth of the church this New Covenant reality in all of us who are Christians are led by the Holy Spirit to discern the truth. We heard that when we preach through 1st John 2:20, you all know the truth. You don't need anyone to teach you the truth that's in Jesus and all of us now are directed to admonish one another and to encourage one another with the word concerning Christ's Colossians 3:16, as we see things one another in songs hymns and spiritual songs. And we're to instruct one another Romans 15 verse 14. We're to encourage one another he's going to say in verse 13 of chapter 3 exhort one another every day as long as it's called today, but none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, I think about this reality Moses gave the law the people of God were to listen to Moses but Moses said there's a profit coming and that profit is Jesus and now we listen to him. So if we listen to Moses rightly we listen to Jesus because Moses said listen to him now when we listen to Jesus and we hear his words were given this ministry to take Jesus words and minister to one another and speak those words to one. Another means we must all read and Ponder in love the word of God be able to interpret it properly be able to skillfully apply it to our own questions in the needs of people around us as they can. Jesus what a calling. Why Jesus said Make Disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the father Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything. I have commanded. what a what mission what a what are the encouraging word today? We don't need something Sensational. What we need is just a reminder to consider Jesus the one in whom we have confidence the one in whom we have hope that we glory in that he's going to bring us safely home to God to our Heavenly calling and that in the meantime, we can take his word and we can minister to others as we remind them to consider Jesus. This is what it means to preach the gospel to one another not just simply that Jesus was. Died for our sins and was buried in Rose again. That's true. That's the heart of the Gospel but also all of the implications that come out of it. You've been forgiven in Christ. You've been declared righteous in price Justified. You've been reconciled to God the father in Christ. You're no longer an enemy. You're a friend of God. You're a child of God, you've been adopted into the family of God. The righteous requirement of God's holy character is satisfied in Jesus means your sins have been propitiate it they've been satisfied in Jesus. God is never going to hold it against you anymore. In Jesus because he took all of your sin and placed it on his son and he took all of Jesus righteousness and placed it on you. And so now you stand forgiven you stand with confidence and hope not only that you have access to God and you can draw near to him as your father and you can tell him what you need and he is The Giver of every good and perfect gift and he gives you grace and mercy to help in your time of need and when you grow weary and you fear that, you're not going to make it you look to Jesus who was not only the author the beginner of your faith is the Perfecter of your faith to even you're keeping yourself in the race is not ultimately up to you. It's Jesus doing it through you by the spirit. That is a glorious. Hope that is what we need to hear. This is what it means to consider Jesus. So let's just go to the table now and consider our savior his body broken and his blood shed for us father. Thank you for this time. Thank you for my brothers and sisters this opportunity to look at your word. Thank you for Moses. Thank you for this man of God who went before us who gave us your word who gave us all of these promises that there was a messiah coming. Who established your law in the nation of Israel? He was faithful. We're going to get to meet him someday. What is thought? And yet even Moses himself father would say the glory doesn't belong to him. It belongs to Jesus the prophet to come the rock whose ways are just I'm so father remind my brothers and sisters of their savior remind them of what is true in Jesus. He is ruling and reigning with the greatest Authority and he is interceding as their high priest and he's able to save to the uttermost. We love you in Jesus name. Amen.
