This summer we are going to be going through some of the most famous Psalms
Throughout the 5 Psalms that we go through you’ll see that we need God in every aspect of our life
We will see how the author of each Psalm shows us a different reason for why we need God
Today we are going to be talking about Psalm 91
We will see that the Psalm is broken up into three parts
Verses 1-2
Verses 1-2
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
The Psalmist starts out by showing us that if we trust in God he will be protect us
He will be our shelter and our refuge
Notice how God is described here
“the Most High” or El Elyon referring to the fact that there is no one greater than Him - He is above all things
“The Almighty” or El Shaddai shows the fact that He has all power — no one and nothing has more power than He does
The Lord is all powerful, he is the highest and greatest
When we trust in Him, He will be our deliverance and our strengthen
The Psalmist gives us the imagery of a shelter showing the the Lord is our hiding place in times of trouble
We are going to face hardships and problems and issues, but if we trust in the Lord He will protect us
Here is the first thing this Psalm teaches us:
The Lord provides Security
We see that the Lord provides security
He is the one that protects us and keeps us safe
He is our refugee and our strength
He is the one that keeps us safe when we are in danger
We cannot survive without the Lord
The Lord is the only one that can provide security in life, nothing else can truly save you or protect you
Nothing else can give you security except for the Lord
Nothing else has the power, the authority, or the ability to give you security except for the Lord!
Verses 3-13
Verses 3-13
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
The second part of the Psalm may seem repetitive but its is showing how the Lord is our fortress and security
The Psalmist divulges on how the Lord protects us as believers
He gives us four ways that the Lord protects us
He delivers us from the snare of a hunter who is trying to destroy us
He delivers us from diseases that will destroy us
He covers us with His wings - safety in danger
He protects with His faithfulness - explained as a shield and sword
Because of the ways that the Lord protects us we are told that we don’t have to fear the night
We don’t have to fear being attacked by evil in the day
Destruction and wickedness that could destroy thousands will not touch us
Here’s the second takeaway:
The Lord delivers from evil
Through all these examples we see that the Lord delivers those who believe in Him from evil
All these examples are meant to make us realize the reality and danger of sin
That sin is what destroys thousands — destroys legions
Yet the Lord is the one who delivers His
Makes us a dwelling place of protection
He is the one that gives us deliverance from all evil and sin and wickedness
When we trust in the Lord Satan cannot stop us
Through Jesus’ death sin has been conquered
The penalty for sin has been paid for!
Verse 14-16
Verse 14-16
14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
The Psalmist now finishes by the Lord is telling us this:
He will protect us and deliver us
He tells us that when we call to Him He will answer
He provides for us salvation and life
Here’s the last takeaway from the Psalm:
The Lord gives protection freely
The Psalm ends by telling us that the Lord does all of this freely
All we have to do is trust in Him
We don’t have to be perfect
We don’t have to do anything special
We simply have to trust in Jesus and He will save us
Jesus’ death is the engine and our faith is the key that brings us to salvation
He is the one the one that
Conclusion
Conclusion
Psalm 91 is a simple Psalm with a powerful message
God will protect us!
He will be our security
He will deliver us from evil
He gives this protection freely
The question then is will you allow Him to be your protection?
Will you go to Jesus and let Him protect you?
