Introduction:
A summary review of Gen 2 and 3, Lesson 3 also, briefly
God’s man, and life in the garden
God created all things, visible, invisible, that God created man in His image, perfect.
man was made of body, soul and spirit
Man was placed in the perfect place, the garden where God provided everything man needed.
The temptation, the fall the consequences
Aim:
Aim:
Attitude: To look at the attitude of man and how that impacted the fall
Action: To trace the action that resulted from man’s selfish disposition.
Outline:
Outline:
The attitude of man
Man removed God from His rightful place and enthroned himself.
How did man do that in the garden?
How does man do this today?
The results of man doing this were
a reproach of God’s love
Reproach: (verb)- to express disappointment in or displeasure with (a person) for conduct that is blameworthy or in need of amendment
a rejection of God’s truth
Rejection: the action of rejecting : the state of being rejected
a rebelling against God’s authority
Rebelling (Adj) opposing or taking arms against a government or ruler
a repugnance towards God’s majesty
Repugnance: (Noun) the quality or fact of being contradictory or inconsistent; strong dislike, distaste, or antagonism
The action that resulted upon man.
Their conscience was affected (Gen3:8)
8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
The realization of their nakedness and sin
No longer in a state in a place of innocence, but in rebellion
They had the understanding of good and evil (Gen3:8-9)
8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
They were aware of God’s holiness and their sinfulness, rebellion
They made feeble attempt to hide from God for they were uncomfortable in His presence because of their sin.
The opportunity for confession allowed (Gen3:9-13)
9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
They had opportunity to be honest and confess their sin to God
Instead of confession came blame
Adam blamed the woman
Eve blamed the serpent
Read to keep in context now (Gen3:14-17)
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” 16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life.
The excuse man gave furnishes the basis for the condemnation (v.17)
In the rest of the chapter we see the judgment on the selfish action, the condemnation that they brought on themselves.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Man discovered wrong in self upon committing the selfish, sinful act.
He attempted to provide covering for self (Gen3:7) which were insufficient.
Man feared the holiness of God and tried to hide from the Creator of all things (Gen3:8)
Man made excuse rather than confess his sinful behavior (Gen3).
