1 Corinthians is been a key book for us, to think of how God orchestrated it all so that we could be here, at this juncture is amazing.
Chapter 11: Hair on a lady, Communion and those who take it unworthily.
Chapter 12: Diversity of Gifts, the “body” of Christ, everyone is a specific part of the body making up the whole.
1 Corinthians 12:12 KJV 1900
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
Chapter 13: LOVE
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Chapter 14 deals with the gift of Tongues and Prophecy but before you can operate in the Gifts of the Spirit YOU MUST LIVE IN LOVE!
1 Corinthians 14:1 KJV 1900
1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Why is prophesy so important?
Voice of God speaking to men.
1 Corinthians 14:2–3 KJV 1900
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Unknown tongue: Spoken man to God or God to man BUT if the latter it MUST be interpreted.
Four basic types of Tongues:
Evidence of the Holy Ghost - Surrendering ones spirit to God’s spirit
Personal Edification - Joining ones spirit to God’s sprint on behalf of ones self
Intercession - Joining ones spirit to God’s sprint on behalf of someone else
Message in Tongues - Word from God, through an individual that MUST be interpreted
1 Corinthians 14:5 KJV 1900
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
This makes a distinction in speaking in tongues for - personal edification, intercession, or a message in tongues - and prophecy different from all the other gifts.
The other Gifts he gives out as he sees fit
BUT Paul wants everyone to speak with tongues and prophesy.
There is a hierarchy to it as well…
Prophecy is greater than tongues because prophecy is more useful to the body!
He goes on to explain why in verses 7-12.
1 Corinthians 14:7–12 (KJV 1900)
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
This is the key!
Seek to edify the church!
It’s all about the sinner!!
1 Corinthians 14:16 (KJV 1900)
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
What do we do about the unlearned/unsaved?
Don’t become confused with verses 21-22.
Paul refers back to Isaiah 28 where it is prophesied that Israel would live in a place where they would not understand the languages around them.
When they were taken into captivity, the Northern Kingdom to Assyria and the Southern Kingdom to Babylon they would remember the moment and repent…
It’s almost like he confuses the metaphors here… 23-24 clear it up!
1 Corinthians 14:23–25 KJV 1900
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
To the unbeliever tongues is scary and crazy!
To the unbeliever prophecy cannot be denied!
Conclusion:
What Paul figured out is that speaking in tongues is safe!
Prophecy is NOT!
There are times for speaking in tongues, there are times to NOT speak in tongues!
Everything in the rest of this chapter is about peace and order!
1 Corinthians 14:26 (KJV 1900)
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1 Corinthians 14:28 (KJV 1900)
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
1 Corinthians 14:30 (KJV 1900)
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
How can this be?
It just comes on me…
1 Corinthians 14:32 KJV 1900
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
1 Corinthians 14:33 KJV 1900
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
1 Corinthians 14:34 KJV 1900
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Some just need to shut up!
KEY
1 Corinthians 14:39 KJV 1900
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
We want the church to speak with tongues and prophecy BUT IT HAS TO BE IN ORDER!
1 Corinthians 14:40 KJV 1900
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
