Luke 1:5–38 NKJV
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. 8 So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 20 But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.” 21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless. 23 So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. 24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.” 38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Last week we looked at Luke introduction and purpose for his gospel.
We notice that even though there had been many who had written their account of the life of Christ, eyewitnesses who had taken it upon their self to write down what they had seen. However, regardless of the many who had written their own account of the gospel it still seemed good to Luke to also write and account of the life of Jesus. His reason, because he said
Luke 1:3 NKJV
3 it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,
Luke had a more complete understanding of the events that took place. How could Luke has a more complete understanding even though he was not an eyewitness of the events? We established that Luke was a physician, but Luke was also a historian. This is evident from both this gospel as well as his account of the ministries of the apostles in the book of Acts. Luke was one who collected detailed information for the purpose of recording these events. He himself was not an eyewitness but he interviewed many eyewitness, collected and correlated the information so that he could write a detail and orderly account.
And he did this.
Luke 1:4 NKJV
4 that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.
He did it to provide evidence for faith in Jesus as the Christ.
Evidence is good, Christian faith is based of evidence. We need evidence but we must rely on and except the evidence that has been provided.
Luke begins his gospel with two stories about how God revealed the good news to two different people and their responses.
I believe that Luke wanted to give to Theophilus and us the right way and the wrong way to respond to the evidence that God has given us.

The Angel Visits Zacharias

Luke 1:5–25 NKJV
24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”
There is nothing wrong with wanting evidence for faith, we should in fact want and have evidence for faith, However, God has given us all the evidence we need. No one lacks faith in God because they lack evidence. The evidence is there, they have either not considered it important enough to seriously look at and consider the evidence or they have suppressed the evidence because their deeds are evil and they don’t want the light of Jesus to expose them. In Rom 1:20 Paul says
Romans 1:20
Romans 1:20 NKJV
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
Now lets consider Mary’s response

The Angel Visits Mary

Luke 1:26–38 (NKJV)
Luke 1:26–38 NKJV
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary believed but desired to understand the revealed truth of God better. Full understanding of God’s revealed truth is certainly not required for faith and there is nothing wrong with asking fort greater understanding “how can these things be” in fact it is good to hunger and thirst for deeper understanding of God’s promises.
So the question is How have we responded to God’s revealed truth? Mary said “How can these things be?” She wanted to understand more but she believed the Angel Gabriel. In fact Elizabeth confirms her faith in
Luke 1:45 NKJV
45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”
Or do we say as I’ve heard many non believers say “How can I know these things?” “Show me a sign.”
Luke 11:29–30 NKJV
29 And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.
People always ask for a sign as though if they had a sign then they would believe. But their lack of faith is not because of lack of evidence. Look at..
Luke 16:27–31 NKJV
27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
Seek the evidence that God has given us. Seek to understand that evidence and seek a greater understanding of the promises of God. But don’t try to play silly games with God.
