A Declaration of Freedom

Praying for China, Asking God to guide their decisions in a way that promotes peace, stability, and prosperity for all citizens, and encourages greater respect for human rights and religious freedom.

Praying for Africa - Asking the lord to send consistent rain, for crops to grow and for people and livestock to drink in the Horn of Africa.

Heal the bodies of precious little ones who suffer from malnutrition, and strengthen the men and women who are working hard to return them to full health.

Heavenly Father have mercy upon them.

Father, I pray that you set their governments and organizations upon the solid rock of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praying for People & Children around the world.

I pray for the wars with Russia & Ukraine, Israel & Hamas, I pray Lord for your comfort for those affected by these wars.

I Pray for the people of Gaza to be able to receive humanitarian relief so they wouldn’t have to experiencing starvation, and suffering.

A Declaration of Freedom

Fourth of July

Main idea:

As we consider the 4th of July and what it means for the United States it’s also a good time to consider the true meaning of freedom experienced through Christ.

I will draw parallels in this sermon between the Declaration of Independence and our spiritual liberation…focusing on the quest for freedom from sin, the price Jesus paid for our freedom, and our responsibility to live righteously.

The truth being this:

Christ's sacrifice grants us ultimate freedom and empowers us to live in God's purpose.

As we consider the freedoms we have it’s important that we also recognize the greatest freedom we’ve ever been offered.

Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, we thank You for the freedoms we enjoy in this nation.

More importantly, we thank You for the freedom we have in Christ.

Help us to live in a way that honors the sacrifice of Jesus and reflects Your love to the world.”

Introduction

Good morning, and Happy 4th of July weekend!

As we celebrate the birth of the United States and the freedoms we cherish, let us also reflect on a deeper freedom that we have in Christ.

Today, I will explore some of the parallels between the Declaration of Independence and our spiritual liberation…focusing on the quest for freedom from sin, the price Jesus paid for our freedom, and our responsibility to live righteously.

The truth being this:

Christ's sacrifice grants us ultimate freedom and empowers us to live in God's purpose.

As we consider the freedoms we have it’s important that we also recognize the greatest freedom we’ve ever been offered…

The liberation, freedom, grace, and eternal salvation we experience through Christ.

Main Teaching

Sometimes the true meaning of these holidays gets lost in the barbeques, food prep, fireworks, and family gatherings that we have.

To begin today, here’s a brief history lesson on the 4th of July and the Declaration of Independence;

The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, is a foundational document in American history.

Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it proclaimed the thirteen American colonies' freedom from British rule.

The Declaration is significant for its articulation of the inherent rights of individuals and the principles of government.

The document begins with a preamble that explains the necessity of declaring independence.

It asserts that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

When a government fails to protect these rights, the people have the right to alter or abolish it and establish a new government.

The Declaration then lists grievances against King George III, accusing him of tyranny and unjust practices that justified the colonies' decision to seek independence.

It concludes with a formal declaration of the colonies as free and independent states, absolving all allegiance to the British Crown.

Interestingly, you can draw parallels between this pursuit of political freedom and the spiritual freedom offered through Christ.

Just as the American colonies sought liberation from oppressive rule, Christians find freedom from sin and death through Jesus.

Both forms of freedom involve a transformative declaration: one of national independence and the other of spiritual salvation.

Both also emphasize the inherent worth and rights bestowed by a Creator, reflecting a deep yearning for liberty and justice.

There are so many interesting parallels that we can draw, for today we’ll begin with our inherent bent towards justice and the quest for freedom.

The Quest for Freedom

● Scripture Reference: Galatians 5:1 - "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

● Declaration Parallel:

The Declaration of Independence was a bold statement by the American colonies proclaiming their desire to be free from British rule.

They sought freedom from oppression and the right to self-governance.

● Sermon Insight:

Just as the American colonists yearned for freedom from tyranny, humanity has always yearned for freedom from the bondage of sin.

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross grants us this ultimate freedom.

In Christ, we are set free from the chains of sin and death.

Our spiritual declaration of independence comes through the salvation offered by Jesus.

Isn’t it interesting that we all feel a call towards freedom and justice inside of us.

We recognize oppression and tyranny in the world around us and we long for something better.

In addition to this embedded reality - we also have such an unfortunate temptation to return to oppressive habits, broken relationships, and as the bible says it…

“As a dog returns to its vomit so a fool repeats his folly.” - Proverbs 26:11

We’ve got to stand firm in our freedom and sacrifice along the way.

These truths have been defining factors in the early American colonists, and in the early followers of Jesus…

not to mention Jesus himself who gave up his heavenly throne to become the servant of all mankind, humbling himself to the point of death on a cross.

There is a very real cost to freedom - or said another way - freedom isn’t free.

The Price of Freedom

● Scripture Reference:

John 8:36 - "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

● Declaration Parallel:

The freedom declared on July 4, 1776, was not without cost.

The fight for independence involved great sacrifice and loss.

Brave men and women gave their lives for the cause of freedom.

● Sermon Insight:

Similarly, our freedom in Christ came at a great price.

Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price by giving His life on the cross.

His sacrifice secured our freedom from sin.

Just as the founders of our nation were willing to pay the price for physical freedom, Christ willingly paid the price for our spiritual freedom.

Because of His sacrifice, we are free indeed.

This is a sobering reality…

We are free today here in America because of what others did on our behalf.

The early American colonists hoped for a better future for their sons, daughters, and grandchildren and they were willing to stake their very lives on that hope.

Similarly, Jesus traded His very life so that we could experience forgiveness, salvation, and freedom from sin.

The great price that others have paid for us is an incredible motivator to continue fighting the good fight.

Freedom isn’t free, and those of us on the receiving end of such great sacrifice have a responsibility to keep.

The Responsibility of Freedom

● Scripture Reference:

Galatians 5:13 - "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

● Declaration Parallel:

With the newfound freedom, the American colonies had a responsibility to establish a just and equitable society.

Freedom comes with responsibility and the need to govern wisely.

● Sermon Insight:

In Christ, we are also called to live responsibly in our freedom.

We are not to use our freedom as a license to sin but to serve one another in love.

Our freedom in Christ empowers us to live righteously and to reflect His love and grace to the world.

True freedom is found in living according to God’s will and purpose.

Freedom is a privilege and an honor.

You may have wondered at some point in your life, “Why was I born here? Why not some other country or place?”

You may have thought to yourself, “What am I going to do with this opportunity?”

Or, “How might I use this freedom to bless others and to shine the light of Christ?”

These are good questions, and they start to get at the responsibility we have to use our freedom in ways that glorify God and lift others up.

I’m reminded of 1 John 3:16 which says,

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

Conclusion

As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember the greater freedom we have in Christ.

The quest for freedom, the price of freedom, and the responsibility of freedom are themes that resonate both in our nation’s history and in our spiritual journey…

It’s what makes the 4th of July the perfect holiday to really sit and consider the amazing blessing we have in our country, our freedoms, and our King Jesus - who gave His life for ours.

Let us stand firm in the freedom that Christ has given us, honor the sacrifice that secured it, and live responsibly as free people, reflecting the love of Christ in all we do.
