Synopsis of scripture leading up to the Banquet invitation

1) Everyone wanted seats of honor 2) Jesus turned things upside down by declaring the least will be first and we should seek the worst seats not the best. 3) The host will make sure you get the seat you deserve. 4) This is a lesson in humility verses honor. 5) But the host is also responsible for the invitation and who gets them. 6) Invited only those in your inner circle or the ones you would like to move into only brings the host glory and repayment. 7) Inviting those who cannot repay and are truly in need of a banquet brings honor to God and yourself in HIS eyes

And now we come to the parable of the banquet that nobody came to.

Luke 14:15

Luke 14:15 NIV84
When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

Again it was one of the people Jesus carried on a dialogue with that opened the door for this discussion

Luke 14:16-17

Luke 14:16–17 NIV84
Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

God is a party-giver! Some of the people in Jesus’ day not only didn’t understand that but found it almost blasphemous. They saw God as an object of religious devotion and a giver of the law. And they were right, to a degree. They had lost the feeling for commandments characterized by the Psalmist.

Psalm 119:163

Psalm 119:163 NIV84
I hate and abhor falsehood but I love your law.

They had come to understand the law as something to be obeyed, feared and scrutinized. There for they were upset with Jesus because he chose to hang around with the “sinners” rather than the “saints.” The Pharisees and Scribes were considered the BEST people around. Who did this “Man of God” think He was? Why any “Good” Jewish person wouldn’t allow one of “Them” in their home, or eat with them and would do as little business with them as possible.

Luke 14:17-20

Luke 14:17–20 NIV84
At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

So the invitations went out and the “Good” people were invited. And each of them had a “Good” excuse. 1) New investment property had to be inspected, 2) New tractor(5 pairs of oxen) had to be tested out, 3)Just got married and had a honey moon to get to. These are just some of the many excuses. I mean lets face it God isn’t really concerned about the party anyway, aren’t the things we have more important than a celebration?

Luke 14:21-22

Luke 14:21–22 NIV84
“The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ “ ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

All the preparation and joy in preparing a banquet for his “friends” and here sat the banquet hall pretty much empty. The master was furious(Anger that brought out wrath). He was going to have that party and his invitation was now sent to those who were the “disenfranchised.” Yet there was still a lot of food and room left so who would he invite now?

Luke 14:23

Luke 14:23 NIV84
“Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

Who was invited? Why the very people whom the religious leaders considered “sinners” and unworthy of even sharing their bread with.

Luke 14:24

Luke 14:24 NIV84
I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’ ”

And if one of those who turned down the invitation when they heard the celebration or smelled the fine food, changed their mind, it was too late the banquet hall was now filled with those who accepted the invite.

The Father has given us an invitation. I am sure we all have “Great” reasons why the invitation came at an inconvenient time but Jesus has personally brought the invitations to us. Those hands pierced by nails have our names engraved by those very same hands. We are being offered a seat at the Father’s table.

Are we one of the disenfranchised, unwashed, poor in spirit invitees? Jesus says “come!” Are we in a life style that has been labeled sinful by someone else or even ourselves? Jesus says “come!” If we are one of the honored ones who got the initial invitations, don’t throw it away or put it in the to do pile for later. Jesus says, “come right now before the doors to the banquet hall are closed and the celebration begins!”
