Introduction

Genesis 8:1-22.

Chapter 1: Creation
Chapter 2: Image of God
Chapter 3: The Fall
Chapter 4: Cain & Abel
Chapter 5: Bridge… concludes with Noah, “the one who will give us rest”
Chapter 6 describes the situation we find ourselves in todayA message about the danger of sin, and the assurance of judgement, and the dire consequences of what will happen to those, who do not repent.
Matthew 24:37–39 ““For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. “For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.”
Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
1 Peter 3:20 “who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.”
2 Peter 2:5 “and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;”
120 years he’s worked on the ark… a century and 2 decades
“Enter the ark”
enclosed with a roof… 450 feet long… 45 feet high… 75 feet wide… able to house thousands of animals… 3 stories… and a window!
No greater scale of anything in the Bible… covered EARTH.. that drowned the entire human race
Real event
Now at the end of the flood
Wheat from the tares
Drowning of the world
Severity of God’s wrath
Yet a day of mercy
God spared Noah… preached for 120 years, God’s righteousness
So God has preserved a people for His own
Many on Broad path… few on the Short path
It’s often the case that Truth, lies on the path less travelled.
In a world promoting lies and whatever the heart desires… a world like Noah’s, truth is found in the minority
God Remembered (Genesis 8:1-5)
Genesis 8:1 NASB95
But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided.
BUT… God
In TOTAL contrast to chapter 7
God remembered Noah in mercy, and in grace!
God’s perspective
God has never remembered anything… because God has never forgotten anything
God knows everything immediately, comprehensively, perfectly, eternally
The OMNISCIENCE of God!
God is all-KNOWING… and everything there IS to know
Noah’s perspective
God ‘remembering’ can only be viewed in light of Noah’s perspective
Trapped for months… it’s a long time
And the question that Noah might have considered in those days, ‘Has God forgotten us? Has God abandoned us?’… is a resounding NO!
It was God who told me to get on the ark
It was God who sealed me within the ark
And at the perfect time, God will call me out of the ark! …
What an encouragement to know… that God knows… and He knows exactly what you need.
You may feel today, as if God has forgotten you.
Lost a job/finances/health/joy
God has not forgotten you… it’s you who has forgotten God
God knows everything there is to know about you
Hairs on your head
Words you will say
Appointed days you have on the earth
WE forget! But God never eos
In the midst of this storm, Noah is comforted by the fact, that God KNOWS
More than this… verse 1 tells us God remembered even the animals!
Book of Job tells us that… that every animal, every SPARROW is known by God!
How much more does He know you?
God caused a wind.
Everything… is under the control of God.
Genesis 8:2 NASB95
Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained;
Water from below the earth, BURSTING forth! … And Floodgates are a closed… God turned off the spicket.
Did this really happen? Yes it did.
In fact this is NOTHING to compare, with the account of Gen 1.
Genesis 8:3–5 NASB95
and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
The specificity DEMANDS that this be a real event.
‘Mountains’ … lands in a mountain range, the highest of which, Ararat… 17,000 feet high

Noah’s Patience (Genesis 8:6-14)

Genesis 8:6–7 NASB95
Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth.
He first sent the RAVEN… an unclean animal
Similar to Joshua sending the spies… go tell of what you see
If he returns… then the ark is the only place to eat and live.
If he doesn’t… then food and dry land are available
Then a DOVE
Genesis 8:8–9 NASB95
Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself.
“Then he put out his hand”… why is that mentioned?
I believe to show the care and concern of Noah, over that which God entrusted him to.
Genesis 8:10–12 NASB95
So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. The dove came to him toward evening, and behold, in her beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; but she did not return to him again.
This shows Noah’s… PATIENCE! WAITING upon God!
The 2nd DOVE:
An olive leaf wouldn’t grow on the tip of a mountain… it needs its own climate… abated from the earth
So he waits once more… sends a dove that doesn’t return… and we all understand the meaning there. It’s time to leave the ark.
Genesis 8:13–14 NASB95
Now it came about in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground was dried up. In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
Refers to the age of Noah… 601 years old
How long has he been on the ark? Scholars estimate a little over a year
The Patience of Noah
Have you kept patient?
Is your faith holding strong patiently waiting to see the risen Lord?
Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience”
Patience: ‘to withhold a great pressure’
To trust in God despite the sometimes overwhelming tide of temptation

Noah’s Obedience (Genesis 8:15-19)

Genesis 8:15–17 NASB95
Then God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. “Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”
God spoke to NOAH.
He is the spiritual leader of the house.
He led them into the ark
He led them within the ark
He would lead them out of the ark
What we should draw from this is the obedience of Noah! How important obedience is to the word of God
True faith is always active… always obeys… always moves out… always moves forward into the will of God… and so it should be for us today

Noah’s Sacrifice (Genesis 8:20-22)

Genesis 8:20 NASB95
Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
“Then”
The FIRST thing Noah does, is build and altar! Why?
Because he recognizes the importance of worshipping God… that no other things should be done before FIRST!!… giving honor and praise to one who just delivered them fro certain death
‘Seek first the kingdom of God and HIS righteousness, all all these things shall be added unto you’
How thankful I am for YOUR presence this afternoon, and the PRIORITY you place on worship!
Coming to the alter that lies within your own heart, giving the sacrifice of PRAISE unto God!
As soon as Noah steps out on dry land, he gives praise to God
We are made… to worship
Altar: a place of sacrifice.
Looks forward to the sacrifice of Christ Himself, who takes away the sin of the world
Genesis 8:21 NASB95
The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
Smoke rises… God metaphorically breathes in the scent.
It was pleasing to the Lord because it was the Lord who prescribed this.
“I will never again destroy every living thing”
This isn’t regret
Ultimately, its God’s mercy
From Adam’s first transgression… all the way down to Noah… what compassion God has on the world
Genesis 8:22 NASB95
“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.”
With all the talk of global warming… the destruction of the planet
Nothing is going to happen to the planet until God says so

Conclusion

The ark, is a picture of the only savior of sinners, and thats the Lord Jesus Christ
There is coming a judgement where every knee will bow, tongue confess that very thing
The only way to escape the final judgement, is for you to have a savior… in THIS lifetime!
Because it’ll be too late on the other side of the grave
But God is full of grace, and compassion
God showed his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Have you committed your life to Christ?
We may very well be near the end of the age
Come to Jesus Christ. He will receive you. He will save you.
