New City Catechism: Question 26
What else does Christ’s death redeem?
Christ’s death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as he powerfully directs all things for his own glory and creation’s good.
Prayer
Honoring God with our Offerings
Psalm 24,1 ESV
1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

Reading the Sermon Text from James 5:7-12
Jakobus 5,7–12 ESV
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
Sermon

Faithfully waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ

1 Kings 19:4 (ESV)
4 “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
James 5:7 (ESV)
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.
Three ways in which we can wait for Jesus’ return
Work like a farmer (v. 7-8)
Be ready for judgement (v. 9,12)
Do not suffer alone (v. 10-11)
1. Work like a farmer (v. 7)
James 5:7 (ESV)
7 See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.
“Yet not I, but through Christ in Me”
Oh, how strange and divine, I can sing, "All is mine" Yet not I, but through Christ in me
James 5:7 (ESV)
7 See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.
Jakobus 5,8 ESV
8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
Psalm 126,5–6 ESV
5 Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! 6 He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
2. Be ready for Judgement (v.9,12)
1 Corinthians 3:13–15 (ESV)
13 and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
Jakobus 5,9 ESV
9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.
Jakobus 5,12 ESV
12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
3. Do not suffer alone (v.10-11)
James 5:10–11 (ESV)
10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.
Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.
James 5:11 (ESV)
11 You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
Psalm 37 verses 7,34,39,40 (ESV)
7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
...
34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
you will look on when the wicked are cut off.
...
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.
