Who are we? The Christian is the child of God

1 John 3:1 NIV
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Pillar Commentary series
Colin G. Kruse, The Pillar New Testament Commentary The Letters of John, Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Mi: Grand Rapids, 2000) accessed via Olive Tree Bible Software
The author's point in 2:28 is that if people remain in Christ (following the teaching they heard from the beginning and which the anointing, the Holy Spirit, continues to teach them), then, when Jesus Christ appears and judges his people, they may be confident and unashamed before him. (referring to Jesus’ judgement)
spirit of ‘see what great love:’
LOOK
'Look at the sort of love the Father has given us!'
hen Christ appears, the author says, 'we shall be like him'. The nature of our likeness to Christ will be a likeness in respect to ethical purity, as the next verse makes clear 1 John 3:2
