Galatians
1:1-5
Galatians 1:1–5 NKJV
1 Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead), 2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Intro Galatia was a Roman province. It included Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe, all cities that Paul visited and ministered to on his first missionary trip. Acts 13 & 14
Paul’s greeting to the Galatians is different than most of his other epistles. Eph, Phil, Col, II Corn, I Thes. All start with a greeting of thanking God for them.
But he does not give thanks for the Galatians. They had turned from the grace of God and returned to legalism.
It was in Lystra where they stoned Paul and left him for dead. But God healed him.
Acts 14:19-20
Paul preached salvation by grace everywhere that he went.
Paul’s message was; Jesus crucified, buried, risen, coming again.
Now the false teachers had come in and preached salvation was only partly grace, but also by obeying the laws of Moses. So they preached grace plus works.
I. His ministry. VS 1
Galatians 1:1 NKJV
1 Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead),
+
1. After Paul’s 1st missionary journey, he was called to give a report concerning his message to the gentiles and their convention. (Acts 15)
a. Paul’s message was to “whosever” but there were those who believed that Paul was teaching heresy. (They believed that the Gentiles had to obey the Laws of Moses. Elab before Jesus what Gentiles had to do)
b. But in the end it was decided that Paul truly preached the message of the gospel. Paul was called to peach to the Gentiles, while others were called to preach to the Jews.
c. But in the case here to the churches Paul in writing to, false teachers had come along.
d. Paul calls himself and Apostles. As he does in his letters, but here he is defending his apostleship. There some that still doubted that Paul was truly called of God.
II. His Message VS 2-5
Galatians 1:2–5 NKJV
2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
And all the brethren which are with me:
a. We do not know who all this was. But it is good to as a believer to have someone with you. We are not it the battle alone.
Unto the churches of Galatia:
1. Refers to all the churches, to the believes throughout Galatia.
a. That met in house in most cases. They didn’t have nice buildings like we have today. The New Testament church is a group of believers, who have fellowship, and worship the Lord.
b. But God wants us to meet together in a local assembly. Heb 10:25
VS 3
1. Paul had become frustrated with the believers in Galatia. But he still desired for them to experience God’s grace and peace from God through Jesus.
a. No matter how frustrated we may get with people, and no matter how angry we may get with people. As followers of Jesus we should want them to experience God’s grace and peace.
2. Grace is the key word here, grace in what Paul preached and the opposite of what the false teachers were teaching.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Grace: Graciousness: It is God freely extending himself, reaching out to us to bless us.
Grace in the undeserved favor from God.
a. We hear the grace a lot, and if we are not careful it can become just a word.
b. The word grace was a word that should have sounded great to the believers at Galatia. It should brought them great joy. They had been rescued from idolatry.
b. It was the grace of God that gave them peace in their lives, and peace they enjoyed was possible through the blood of Jesus. Col 1:20
c. We should never over look the grace of God. We take the grace of God for granite.
d. Grace refers to God’s kindness towards His fallen creation. It is a kindness that is undeserved. It’s undeserved because of who we are.
Romans 5:10 NKJV
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
e. We were reconciled” “Being reconciled” This is specking of a change.
Colossians 1:21 NKJV
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
f. As humans we are born with a rebellious nature. As sinners we are enemies of God and a Holy God cannot allow a sinful man into His presence. So, any kindness we experience from God is undeserved.
g. So God saves us, not because of what we do, but because of what He did. “Be grace are ye saved through faith”
2. And when we have received God’s grace we have peace.
a. If you truly believe in grace plus nothing, you can truly have peace. 1st there no being sure if you are save. That will give you no peace.
b. But there will come a time or times, when we have some doubts (not about our salvation) but other doubts, doubts that cause us to be less faithful. (Peter walking on the water)
c. Sometimes it just about something we need to do. (ELab me trip to Ga)
d. READ VS AGAIN. Paul want to ensure them, that they have grace and peace only through Jesus, not what the false teachers were teaching.
VS 4
Who gave himself for our sins: John 10:18
John 10:18 NKJV
18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
1. No one took His (Jesus) life, He willing laid His life down for us.
That he might deliver us from this present evil world:
Deliver: To pluck out; Complete rescue; full removal.
a. It is work that is finished, Jesus cried out from the cross, it is finished. It is a work that is complete.
From this present evil word: “Overcoming the enemy”
b. The only way to be delivered from the evil world is through Jesus.
c. The reason God permitted His Son to suffer such agony of soul, spirit, and body…the reason God permitted Him to become sin for you and me….the reason God permitted Him to die for the ungodly.
d. It was through the death of Jesus that we might be delivered from this present evil age.
e.
e. It is the will of the father. According to the will of the father:
VS 5
To whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen
a. Everything God does ministries to His glory. God’s grace is one of the factors of that vast equation of his glory.
b. God displays His wisdom, and power; in redemption, He displays His love and His grace. The more we learn of God’s grace, the more we glorify Him.
Revelation 4:11 NKJV
11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
