John 20:30–31 “30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 1:1–5 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Matthew, Mark and Luke are the body and John is the soul of the gospels. Calvin
Although last in order, it is well that we place John at the beginning in order to more fully understand the others. Calvin
Calvin says four and five refers to natural reasoning that distinguishes man from the brutes in which man has darkened with sin but it is not totally extinguished.
