ESCHATOLOGY: STUDY OF END TIMES
HARDEST PART OF PREACHING IS WHAT NOT TO SAY....LEAVING OUT STUFF....FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS
THE BIBLE
He wants the crucial, essential things to be really plain so that anybody can have a real, deep, solid confidence.
Jesus existed. He was the Son of God. He lived a perfect life. He died a substitutionary death. He bore my sin. He rose from the dead. If I trust him, I can be forgiven for all my sins and have eternal life
. Those central, glorious realities are clear enough for children to grasp and adults to grasp. And then there are aspects of the Bible that have STRAINED the minds of scholars for thousands of years, which is what you would expect in a book from God, right?
God wrote this book, and he has the gifts to make it complex and he has the gifts to make it plain. And the complex parts are intended to make us desperate for him, to make us cry out for him, to make us humble so that we’re willing to learn from each other.
STILL DONT UNDERSTAND, MAYBE MORE CONFUSED

Acts 1:6–9 (ESV)
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

STAND IN HUMBLENESS AND HONOR (4MINS)
Mark 13 (ESV)
1 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 “But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter.
19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
1 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
JESUS PREDICTIONS: THIS HAPPENED IN 70AD
” That was literally fulfilled in 70 AD when Titus, the Roman general, came and destroyed Jerusalem and ransacked the temple. Not one stone was left on another. It’s also interesting that in this great prophetic passage of Scripture, Jesus prophesized about something that would be fulfilled in their lifetime.
FULFILLED 300 PROPHECIES AND PREDICTED OTHER PROPHESIES: THAT HIS WORD WOULD BE EVERLASTING, CRUCIFIXTION, RESURRECTION, PETER 3X, JUDAS BETRAYER, MIRACLES....SHES NOT DEAD.
MORE DETAILS TO QUESTION:
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
NOT THE END SIGNS
Mark 13:7–8 (ESV)
7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
EARTHQUAKES:It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage.
In 2023, a total of 1,712 earthquakes with magnitude of five or more were recorded worldwide as of December that year.

YOU DON’T EARN SALVATION THROUGH ENDURANCE, YOU PROVE IT.
PERSECUTION IS GOING TO HAPPEN
i. It is easy for us to underestimate how difficult a time of persecution can be. While few Christians in the Western world face persecution, Christians in other parts of the world often face these trials.
· If I came from an orthodox Jewish family, they might consider me a blasphemer and account me as dead for choosing Jesus.
· If I came from a strict Muslim family, I might be rejected by my family and be literally killed for choosing Jesus.
· If I came from a Hindu family in India, I could be rejected and martyred for choosing Jesus.
· In China, I would be allowed to practice Christianity only in the state-sponsored church – or be persecuted. My church might be one of the 1,500 destroyed or shut down since November of 2000.
· In Sudan, I might be killed or literally enslaved by a Muslim army.
· In Indonesia, I might be given a choice by Muslims: convert to Islam or die, or I might have my church bombed during a worship service.
· In Pakistan, I might be jailed by Muslim government officials.

Mark 13:14–23 (ESV)
14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

An abomination is “something that causes disgust or hatred”; and desolation is “a state of complete emptiness or destruction.” Jesus warned that something (or someone) that people detested would stand in the temple someday. When that horror occurred, residents of Judea should seek cover without delay.
Jesus referencing Daniel in His words in the Olivet Discourse. The prophet Daniel mentioned the abomination of desolation in three places:
27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
31 Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.
11 And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days.
The wording in the above translations indicates that the abomination of desolation is an object; in some other translations, the abomination appears to be a person: Daniel 9:27
Regardless of whether the abomination of desolation is a person or a thing, Daniel predicted the following:
1. A future ruler will make a treaty with the people of Israel.
2. The terms of this treaty will be for a “week”—which we take to be a period of seven years.
3. Midway through this time, the ruler will gather his troops and put an end to the sacrifices and offerings in the temple.
4. At that time the ruler will desecrate the temple, setting up some type of sacrilegious object.
5. The desecration of the temple will continue until the judgment of God is finally meted out on the ruler and his followers, 1,290 days (3½ years and 1 month) later.
Many times Old Testament prophets will declare a prophecy that will have two parts to its fulfillment. It will have a closer, nearer historical fulfillment. But it will also have a future or what’s called an “eschatological” interpretation, and that is still future to us today. So it has two parts; it happens in history and then it would be fulfilled in future prophecy.
Daniel’s prophecies about the abomination of desolation seemed to have at least a partial fulfillment in 167 BC when a Greek ruler by the name of Antiochus IV desecrated the temple in Jerusalem. Antiochus called himself “Epiphanies” (“illustrious one” or “god manifest”). He set up an altar to Zeus over the altar of burnt offering, and he sacrificed a pig on the altar. Antiochus went even further in his atrocities, slaughtering a great number of the Jews and selling others into slavery. And he issued decrees forbidding circumcision and requiring Jews to sacrifice to pagan gods and eat pig meat.
What Antiochus did certainly qualifies as an abomination, but it was not a complete fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy. Antiochus Epiphanies did not enter a covenant with Israel for seven years, for example. And in these synoptic gospels Jesus, speaking some 200 years after Antiochus’s evil actions, spoke of Daniel’s prophecy as having a still future fulfillment.
The question then becomes, when, after Jesus’ day, was the abomination of desolation prophecy fulfilled? Or are we still waiting for a fulfillment?
I have a futurist view, which sees the abomination of desolation prophecy as still future.
Jesus was referring to the Antichrist who, in the end times, will establish a covenant with Israel for seven years and then break it by doing something similar to what Antiochus Epiphanies did in the temple. The sacrilegious object Jesus called “the abomination of desolation” could be the “image of the beast” that the Antichrist’s right-hand man, the false prophet, will order to be set up and worshiped (Revelation 13:14). Of course, for Matthew 24:15 to be yet future, the temple in Jerusalem will have to be rebuilt before the tribulation begins.
Those who are alive during the tribulation should be watchful and recognize that the breaking of the covenant with Israel and the abomination of desolation will herald the beginning of the worst 3½ years in history (see Matthew 24:21).

NOT A HILL TO DIE ON
NOT GONNA EXACTLY KNOW WHEN!!!
Mark 13:32–37 (ESV)
IT’S OK TO NOT KNOW…JESUS DIDN’T KNOW
NOR THE SON: he did not lose his OMNISCIENCE, but THROUGH OBEDIENCE, he restricted it
WHAT’S NOT OKAY......BEING INDIFFERENT, APATHETIC, UNCONCERNED, OH WELL
So I think to say this, Okay, he hasn’t come for 2000 years. Therefore, it’s unlikely that he’s going to come for another 500 years. Therefore, we don’t need to live in the expectancy of a near return-----------BIBLE DOESNT ALLOW THAT LINE OF THINKING
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
COMMENTATOR SAID:
Some people have the idea, “We don’t know when Jesus is coming, so it doesn’t really matter.” Others have the idea, “We don’t know when Jesus is coming, so we have to find out and set a date.” The right response is, “I don’t know when Jesus is coming so I have to be alert, eager, and ready for His coming.”
IF U woke every morning and said, “Jesus is coming soon and I have to live like He is coming soon,” would it make their life better or worse?
ARE YOU READY?
