INTRODUCTION:
TENSION - Dumb questions example. lottery.
John 5:1 ESV
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
feast - feast of tabernacles, 6 months later.
Quick comment: they would all go into the temple to meet with God.
Like if we all had to go to Tallahassee.
up to - it was on hill.
John 5:2 ESV
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
SHOW MAP OF JERUSALEM. SHEEP GATE TO TEMPLE.
Sheep gate - Where sheep came in. But Sheep weren’t allowed in the city.
There was only one reasons. Sheep for sacrifice. That was how they got forgiveness. Explain.
The Sheep Gate was the first gate to be restored, and it was rebuilt by the High Priest and his fellow priests. Note: This was the only gate that was consecrated (set apart as holy), as it was used for bringing in sacrifices for the temple. It was called the Sheep Gate because it was the entrance for sheep entering into the Temple compound from the sheep markets (where lambs were sold for sacrifice in the Temple) and the sheep pool (later known as Pool of Bethesda), where sheep were washed for sacrificing.Thousands of years later, when Jesus was on earth, He always entered Jerusalem via the Sheep Gate (except for the Triumphal Entry). The Sheep Gate also led to Golgotha, the path Jesus took to the crucifixion.
Bethesda - house of suffering - mercy. These people lived for the mercy of others, but they likely did not feel God was merificul.
Right outside of temple. Where priests would come to get water.
in Jerusalem - yes, but outside the wall. significant. Because unclean people could not come into the city????? Not exactly true.
John 5:3 ESV
3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
disabled folks - They were hopeless back then. Think about it. You had a bad broken leg. You could be crippled the rest of your life.
There was no hospitals or homes. Hopefully people would bring them food and water to care for them that was it.
Levi???
They would all be just outside. So close, yet so far.
John 5:3–4 KJV 1900
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
Likely added later. So think of this as historical data. Probably wasn’t true, but probably what they thought was true.
Right besides the temple.
Illustration?????? Thrid world country story?????
John 5:5 ESV
5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
He was desperate. 38 years. 1986. There was no hope for him other than this.
So close to the Temple, but he was not allowed in.
He is paralyzed at the house of Mercy.
He is paralyzed at the place he thinks will heal him. He made his way there through great effort.
Maybe you have made your way to a place you thought would heal you through great effort. But it was only a legend. It was not thing more.
John 5:6 ESV
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
knew - how did he know?

Jesus sees our struggle before we see Him

Do you want to be healed? Seems like a dumb question. Of course. But the question could be asked of you? If you had to change the whole life around. If you had to leave that old sinful habit.
....Not feel better, but be healed. That would be a radically different life.
He thought there was life in the water, but he was talking to the living water!

Do you want to be healed?

This was the first thing Jesus said. Not hello, I’m Jesus. Simply.
Seems almost cruel, but he isn’t asking a question, he is making an offer.
John 5:7 ESV
7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
He doesn’t answer! He blames his situation. Maybe that is you. You are blaming others or thinking things will change.
HAHA “I am speed” pep talk. show clip
He had no one. He had put himself in a spot where it would heal him , but no one around to actually help. Maybe this is you? We can still feel so alone even in the midst of the crowd.
He would be fighting for his life. But he could never make it in time.
Jesus came to save the people that couldn’t save themselves.
BUT MOM illustration - Giving an excuse.

He was looking in the wrong place to find healing.

If you are dependent on anyone but Christ, you will not be saved.
John 5:8 ESV
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
Arise - wake up!
Jesus does not even his answer. He was going to saved whether he liked it or not.
He told him to walk, and he got healed. Not healed then walk.
John 5:9 ESV
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
He didn’t say no, or I can’t
John 5:10 ESV
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
Legalistic. It wasn’t actually
John 5:11 ESV
11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ ”
John 5:12 ESV
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
Jesus told me.
This is like someone getting up from a wheel chair and then jay walking. They were more upset at the jay walking.
John 5:13 ESV
13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
John 5:14 ESV
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”

Our response to being healed is to sin no more.

The order was not stop sinning so I might heal you! The greatest thing about you is that you were healed by Jesus.
CONCLUSION: We all have a disease. Paralizes and keeps us from finding salvation. Keeps us from God. (not allowing lame to enter temple).
The old mat became his testimony.
CONCLUSION: Bethsaida house of Mercy in Hebrew. House of Shame in Aramaic.
