The assembly line concept is believed to have originated around the 14th century, with examples in medieval shipbuilding and the Venetian Arsenal's production of ships down a canal. Eli Whitney is credited with inventing the assembly line in the United States between 1797 and 1801, using standardized equipment and a large unskilled workforce to produce large quantities of identical gun parts quickly and cheaply.
The name we hear most on the topic of assembly lines is not Eli Whitney though. Henry Ford is known to revolutionize the concept of the assembly line.
Henry Ford is often credited with inventing the automotive assembly line, installing the first moving assembly line for mass-producing an entire automobile on December 1, 1913. Ford's innovation reduced the time it took to build a car from over 12 hours to 1 hour and 33 minutes, and allowed him to crank out millions of Model T vehicles annually. In 1908, the car sold for $825 and by 1925 it only sold for only $260.
Through the assembly line something that was once only accessible to the rich now is affordable for everyone.
