Repentance:
3567 μετάνοια (metanoia), ας (as), ἡ (hē): n.fem.; ≡ Str 3341; TDNT 4.975—LN 41.52 repentance, a change of mind which results in a change of life(style), (Mk 1:4; Lk 3:8; 24:47; Ac 5:31; 11:18; 26:20; Ro 2:4; 2Co 7:9; 2Ti 2:25; Heb 6:6; 12:17; 2Pe 3:9)
One who repents has faith, for it is faith in God that is expressed when we carry out a decision to turn from our old ways and to commit ourselves to God’s ways.
Repentance is a expression of faith.
Acts 3:19 (NASB95)
19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
When the word repentance is mentioned we have a tendency to immediately think of:
Condemnation
Brow Beating
Negativity
Judgmentalism
Nothing could be farther from the truth
Repentance is a gift from God.
And is fundamental to the life of the believer.
Its:
life giving
more liberating
more glorious
Without it sinners could not be regenerated and saints cannot be renewed.
Repentance onto life and salvation
18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”
Its God’s grace in our lives.
It remakes and restores and repairs
It starts in darkness and ends in light
it starts in bondage and ends in freedom
it starts in death and ends in life
it makes the difference between heaven and hell
How many know that God died for everyone. God so LOVED the world. He died on the cross for everyone. His saving grace is for everyone. However not everyone will except that Grace or repent and turn to God.
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Repentance is a basic elementary truth:
Hebrews 6:1 (ESV)
1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
The first step in repentance is having our sin brought to the light. Who wants to have cancer in his spirit and not even know about it? First the Spirit brings conviction of sin.
Look at how David responded to Nathan the prophet when he exposed the kings sin.
He appealed for mercy Psalm 50:1
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
David is filthy, vile, and stained. Yet he appeals to God’s unfailing love and great compassion.
18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.
19 He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.
David commited adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed.
Yet he comes to God with true repentance.
He comes with iniquity and leaves with a purity.
He comes with guilt and leaves with pardon
he comes weighed down and leaves rejoicing
God is compassionate.
Repentance is not cheap. It cost Jesus His life on the cross.
1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
If we continue to live like nothing ever happened in our life then it might be good to question our repentance and our salvation
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
Whoever has been born of God has received a new nature. the core of his being is different.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
True repentance says
“God You are right and I am wrong
I deserve Your judgement and You would be completely justified in pouring out your anger on me
to cleance me and make me whole
ro turn my heart and renew my mind
to give me grace to obey so that I may never go this way again
according to Your abundant kindness. Lord I forsake my sin
Robert Morris - Largest church in the US with 9 Campus and around 100,000 members
He had a moral failure back in the 80’s while married and a pastor in his early 20’s. He went on to take a couple of years off ministry and then jumped right back into pastoring.
He would talk about it as if it was a afair that he repented and was restored.
Well the problem was is that one he didn’t come forward until he was found out. he said to everyone that it was young lady through out his ministry years but she was 12 at the time and it went on for 4 years. That’s called child molestation.
If he was truly repentant he would have gave the facts,
never been in church leadership or authority again, - there are some professions that a child molester should never be in again. Like anything to do with kids. A doctor. A lawyer. And specially a pastor.
Turned himself in to the police
When she asked him to pay her counseling bills he said he would pay half and only if she signed a gag order.
Then he would go on to blame her for what he did
Fake repentance is behaviour modification to mirror what they think the other person wants for a season. Its motives are wrong and it repentance without God.
