Dr Howard Sucton - Never Promote yourself, let God promote you
Washing of the Feet
You can do anything as long as you know who you are serving
Knowing yourself, and who you are in Christ
Have a fair estimation of your gifts
Don’t be panic’d about others giftings
The first person you need to lead in leadership is yourself
Pride refers to an unwarranted attitude of confidence. While pride can have a positive connotation of self-worth or boasting, it is often used in Scripture to refer to an unhealthy elevated view of one’s self, abilities, or possessions.
Lexham Theological Wordbook Concept Summary
The word most frequently used in this way is the noun גָּאוֹן (gāʾôn, “height”)
Lexham Theological Wordbook Concept Summary
The Septuagint often uses ὑπερηφανία (hyperēphania, “arrogance”) to render gā’ôn. Accordingly, the NT authors sometimes use the same noun or the related adjective ὑπερήφανος (hyperēphanos, “arrogant”) when speaking of pride in a negative sense (e.g., Mark 7:22; Luke 1:51) but use the noun καύχησις (kauchēsis) when referring to something in a positive or neutral light (Rom 3:27; 2 Cor 7:4; 1 Thess 2:19).
Jeremiah 9:23–24 (NIV)
This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Humily is glad that God gets all the glory - God chose me, i didn’t choose him. Loves to talk about the grace of God.
Redemption is caried out so that there is no prop for boasting in man, but God
Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
Humility agrees that everything we have is a gift from God - What ever gift, tallent, characteristic etc, put away your pride
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
Humility aggrees that every beat of my heart is a gift of god governed by god
Humility does not want to be in charge
humility says God reigns, we are under his sovern control
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
The humble willingness to forgive an offence is rooted in being forgiven by Jesus
THIS IS GOSPEL HUMILITY
CROSS HUMILITY
Philippians 2:3–8 (NIV)
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
God serves you every day of your life. You are being served all day long
Humility is concerned with how to serve others
Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
