Hymn - CHRIST IS MADE THE SURE FOUNDATION (567) - LATIN 7th CENTURY TRANS. JOHN MASON NEALE 1818-66

Psalm Reading

Psalm 68:11–14 ESV
The Lord gives the word; the women who announce the news are a great host: “The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!” The women at home divide the spoil— though you men lie among the sheepfolds— the wings of a dove covered with silver, its pinions with shimmering gold. When the Almighty scatters kings there, let snow fall on Zalmon.

Reading

Matthew 6:5–15 ESV
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Sermon

Sincerity of Heart
Do not use Empty Phrases
God is aware of your needs
Addressing God in prayer
Our Father in Heaven

Hallowed by Your Name

Matthew 6:9 ESV
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
In ancient times a name was not meerly to distinguish one person from another
Rather, was an expression of the very nature of the person, or his position
They were given a new name if there was a significant change they had gone through
God has revealed himself, in all His Works
Yehovah: “I am that I am” - emphasizes God’s Unchangeable coverant faithfulness towards His people
El-Shaddai: God Almighty
Elohim: The Most High
Hallow means to hold it in reverence
to honour, glorify & exhalt Him
Not just an intellectual acknowledgement
Humility of spirit
Gratitude of heart
earnest study of God’s works
observation changes into rapturous astonishment and worship
his creation & events in history
Psalms are filled with the concepts that for those who trust in him, the Lord is ...
Hearer of prayer
Refuge in time of difficulty
One who daily cares and provides
blots out transgressions
never forsakes his children, not even at the moment of death
and so much more ....
Our prayer should include joyfully magnifying the Lord
Praising God when seeing his marvelous creation
Marvel at the wisdom of God revealed in the construction of the human body
We should be expressing our heartfelt adhoration and love for our Father

Your Kingdom Come

Matthew 6:10 ESV
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
The first petition already iumplies the second...
The petition implies:
1) It is only when the heavenly father, on the basis of the Son’s atonement and through theoperation of the Holy Spirit, rules in men’s hearts that true and lasting bettterment in an individual, family, social, national and internation conditions can be expected.
2) This is a prayer. It has been demonstrated time and again that he coming of theentrance of the reign of God into human hearts requires earnest prayer.
Matthew 7:7 ESV
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Acts 4:31 ESV
And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
3) Until the moment of the second coming there is need for this prayer. For although the kingdom is here already, it is still absent from many hearts.
4) The transforming grace and power of God is required before man changes from the ardent yearning “my kingdom come”, boasting in their own endeavours, to the humble petition “your Kingsom come”
5) Prayer for the establishment of the Kingship of Christ in human hearts does not exclude the necessity of work. There must be preaching, visiting homes, Bible translation, distribution, follow-up work and much more.
1 Thessalonians 2:9–12 ESV
For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
6) “Your Kingdom Come” is clearly a prayer for the progress of missionary activity
7) The desire of the supplicant is not that the Kingdom may come extensively, but that itmay be established intensively
That the individual and all those already converted may increasingly acknowledge God in Christ as their soverign ruler

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven

Matthew 6:10 ESV
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
The second petition already implies the third
God’s Will is clearly revealed in His law.
It is that will which is done in heaven, but not yet to any great extent on earth.
It is being perfectly obeyed in heaven
God’s plan for eternity is always being realised both in heaven and on earth, and cannot be subject to prayer.
It is therefore the ardent desire of the person who sincerely breathes the Lord’s Prayer that the Father’s will shall be obeyed as completely, heartily and immediately on earth as this is constantly being done by the inhabitants of heaven.
Completely
The Story of King Saul shows that incomplete obedience, in which man sets his own will over against the divine does not receive God’s approval and has serious consequences.
1 Samuel 15:22–23 ESV
And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.”
Heartily
Deuteronomy 26:16 ESV
“This day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and rules. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Matthew 22:37 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Immediate Obedience
Noah
Abraham
Samual
Disciples
Acts 5:29 ESV
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Jesus
Matthew 26:39 ESV
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Although the first three and last three are sharply divided, we must ot regard them as seperate.

Give us this day our daily bread

Matthew 6:11 ESV
Give us this day our daily bread,
During his ministry, Jesus was never forgetful of the physical needs of his disciples, that they may ...
live and be happy
be able to vigorously work to support the kingdom causes
Jesus clearly taught that the believer is to remove worry of how their needs will be met
We are provided with two aspects combined:
Give us this day our bread for the current day (daily portion)
Give us this day our needful bread (necessary of existence)
1) Moderate our desires and requires
We ask for essentials not luxuries
Proverbs 30:8–9 ESV
Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
2) Faith in God
Trust in the heavenly Father, who loves and cares
Psalm 37:25 ESV
I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.
Does not condemn “making provision for the future” (e.g.: Joseph & store houses in egypt)
Rather, condemns “anxiety about the future” as if there were no heavenly Father
3) Total Dependence
no matter how rich all are dependent on the condition of soil, weather and health of body
all are dependent upon the soverign God who is in control of the universe
4) Humility
despite the hard work to earn money and paying for his groceries, we must accept what is on the table is a gift from God, a produce of grace
James 1:17 ESV
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
5) Willingness to work
How else would one dare to pray for daily sustenance
2 Thessalonians 3:10 ESV
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.
6) Generosity
Not “give me” but “give us”
Galatians 6:10 ESV
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
