Title of the message this Morning

Completely Restored

Main idea:
The only thing more amazing than one miracle is two miracles.
Completely restored is a dive into the double miracles performed by Jesus in Mark 5, highlighting His compassionate and transformative power.
We can see how Jairus' desperate faith and a suffering woman's bold belief lead to complete restoration and healing at the hands of their Messiah.
Through these stories, we learn the importance of turning to Jesus in our moments of need, trusting Him in our suffering, and believing in His power to bring life even in the most hopeless situations.
Prayer:
“Lord, we need you all the time, but especially in our times of suffering and loss.
Give us the strength to turn to you, to trust you, and to follow your lead wherever it may take us.”
Scripture: Mark 5:21-43, Luke 4:18
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)

Introduction

I think we can all agree here today that the only thing more amazing than one miracle is two miracles.
Fortunately for us, Completely Restored is a dive into the double miracles performed by Jesus in Mark 5, highlighting His compassionate and transformative power for those in the midst of suffering and loss.
In these verses We can see how Jairus' desperate faith and a long-suffering woman's bold belief lead to complete restoration and healing at the hands of their Messiah.
Through their example, we learn the importance of turning to Jesus in our moments of need, trusting Him in our suffering, and believing in His power to bring life even in the most hopeless situations.
These miracles highlight Jesus as the promised Messiah, the only one who could proclaim, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free…” (Luke 4:18)
He is the one we’ve been waiting for.

Main Teaching

The First Encounter

Mark 5:21-24
When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.
So Jesus went with him.
Here begins the drama of our story…
In the usual Markan fashion, Jesus enters into a tense situation that requires immediate attention.
In this case, it’s Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue who bursts on the scene…
Which highlights the desperate situation that Jairus is in - he has to ask for help from Jesus… a fringe teacher with questionable following.
One commentator says it like this; “Desperation makes men bold.”
Without apology or preliminary, Jairus bursts in, and his urgent need is sufficient excuse.
Jesus never complains of scant respect when wrung hearts cry to Him.
But this man was not only driven by despair, but drawn by trust.
He was sure that, even though his little darling had been all but dead when he ran from his house, and was dead by this time, for all he knew, Jesus could give her life.[1]”
Jesus responds with an equally immediate answer as he seemingly begins walking with Jairus even as he’s still pleading his case.

Which Brings us to our Second Encounter

Mark 5:24-34
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him.
He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched me?”
“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered,
But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.
Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
What’s going on here?
Some English translations sanitize this text using euphemisms like “an internal hemorrhage.” Come on, really?
For twelve years? I don’t think so.
This woman is menstruating, and all women were considered unclean during their monthly period. (see Leviticus 15)
But this woman had been bleeding continuously, beyond the normal cycle, for twelve years.
That put her in a special class of social outcasts, - called za-vah, not unlike the lepers. Unlike the menstruating woman, the zavah had to wait a further seven “clean” days from the day her bleeding stopped to regain her state of ritual purity, after offering “two turtledoves or two pigeons” as a sacrifice (Lev. 15:25–30).
- She was isolated from her family and community.
- She is prohibited from Synagogue life.
- She is prohibited from marrying, and if already married her husband can divorce her.
- She is considered by most to be cursed of God, the object of divine discipline, probably as punishment for some unspeakable sin.
Until Jesus passes by.
she was Desperate, she presses toward him in the crowd, hoping to be healed and cleansed, restored to the community, to marriage, and to a normal life.
She gets close enough to reach out and touch the hem of his garment, and immediately she senses in her body that her bleeding has stopped and that she has been freed from her suffering.
Jesus senses it immediately and begins asking, “Who touched me?”
But the woman is trembling with fear because her deliberate action has now made Jesus unclean, and she could be executed for such an offense.
But because Jesus is intent on creating a society that transforms all of life as we know it, he wants her to be restored—not just her health, but also her position in society.
“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
Jesus doesn’t want to be a genie in a bottle, and the healing he offers isn’t magic.
Here, the woman is made whole just by touching Jesus’ garment.
She knows it and so does he.
But that’s not enough for Jesus; he wants to know her.
He wants a relationship with her.
Thus, the question, “Who touched me?”
The question had to be terrifying to this woman.
Her condition made her “unclean,” separated from “normal” society.
And touching Jesus was a crime punishable by death.
But Jesus knew this woman’s ultimate healing was not just physical, but relational.
She needed to be restored to right relationships with God and the community.
She needed TOTAL and COMPLETE healing in all the areas of her broken life.
Doesn’t that sound familiar?
Have you ever thought to yourself, “If I could just get ahold of Jesus…”
In this first miracle we see exactly what can happen when a person gets ahold of Jesus.

The final encounter

(Mark 5:35-43)

While Jesus is still speaking with the woman, news arrives that Jairus' daughter has died.
Jesus, however, encourages Jairus to maintain his faith.
Scripture: "While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. 'Your daughter is dead,' they said. 'Why bother the teacher anymore?' Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, 'Don't be afraid; just believe.' He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, 'Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.' But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, 'Talitha koum!' (which means 'Little girl, I say to you, get up!'). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished." (Mark 5:35-42, NIV)
There is so much to unpack here, as Mark again records the intense drama of our story.
You’ve got to love that Jesus responds to the reports of the girls death with such an incredible faith, “Don’t be afraid; Just believe.”
Pastor -
This could be a great point to believe that the bible gives the encouragement “do not fear” or “don’t be afraid” 365 times
Or said another way, once a day.
The point being that when we are walking with Jesus, as Jairus was, we have nothing to fear.
A couple final notes on this second miracle -
First: The young girl responds immediately to Jesus’ command to get up and she begins to walk around“Death where is your sting” - you can almost hear the song playing in the background.
And then finally: One of the most practical miracle working instruction given in the entire bible; “Give her something to eat.”
After all, She’s just come back from the dead, she’s got to be hungry!
Jesus is an amazingly powerful, compassionate, and practical savior.
He’s the perfect high priest who understands what we need and goes to the father on our behalf.

Conclusion

This double miracle story highlights three very important points of faith as we come boldly to Jesus…
“boldly to the throne of grace to receive mercy and obtain grace to help us in our times of need.” (Hebrews 4:16).
Remember these points this coming week;
We must turn to Jesus in our moments of need
We must trust Him in our suffering
We must believe in His power to heal and restore
In Mark 5:21-43, we see that Jesus responds to faith with compassion and power, bringing complete restoration to those who trust in Him.
Are you turning to Him when you need help?
Do you trust Him?
Do you want to get well?
(This is a question Jesus asked in the gospel of John)
Sometimes we need to humble ourselves before God, and seek His help.
Just like Jairus did, and just like the suffering woman did.
When we do, we discover
In Jesus, complete restoration is possible.

Communion

I want to take a few moments to give you the opportunity to ask forgiveness of any sin in your life.
Let us pray over the elements (Cross Exposed) in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost
Read first Corinthians 11:23- 26 - (Taking the elements together)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (Take Cup)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
