The Fall and the law of sin and death (Lesson 19) 7/23/24

Introduction

By Adam’s one act of transgression sin made its entrance into the world (ref: Gen3:17-24)
The man was the cause for the ground being cursed (3:17)
The man is to eat through through sorrow (3:17 implied)
The man would have to deal with thorns and thistles (3:18)
The man would eat by the sweat of the face (3:19)
The man would return to dust one day (3:19)
The man is barred from the Tree of life (3:22-23)
Man on that day was separated from God and died that day (3:23-24)
Through Adam and Eve entered a law (a principle made known) that is still in effect today (Rom3:12
Romans 3:12 NASB95
12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”
then Rom8:1-3
Romans 8:1–3 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

Aim:

To describe the “Law of sin and of death.”
To show that freedom from this law and its effect is realized (made possible) in Christ Jesus

Outline:

The law is simply stated
Turn to (Eze18:20; Gen2:17) (Ref Gen3:24)
Ezekiel 18:20 NASB95
20 “The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.
Then Gen2:17
Genesis 2:17 NASB95
17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Adam did not suffer physical death on the day of sin, but he did on the day die, was separated from God because of the sin.
The implication of the law of sin and of death
The law defined by W.E. Vines: “The separation of man from God (life).”
Death is the separation from God.
Turn to (Isa59:1-2)
Isaiah 59:1–2 NASB95
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
God could hear but would not
God could reach but would not.
Because of sin man was separated from communion with God
Because of sin they were separated from the blessings of God.
Because of sin they were separated from the life of God.
Death is separation from eternal life (turn to Eph2:1-3, then Eph4:17-20)
Ephesians 2:1–3 NASB95
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Then Eph4:17-20
Ephesians 4:17–20 NASB95
17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way,
Just being alive, existing is not life, not life with God
Human life without God is death but true life, is eternal life with God (turn to 1Jn5:13; ref: Jn17:3)
1 John 5:13 NASB95
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
The essence of life of those redeemed, reconciled, is eternal life the life of God Himself (Turn to Jn11:25, ref/quote Jn14:6; turn to 2Tim1:10)
John 11:25 NASB95
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
Then turn to 2Tim1:10
2 Timothy 1:10 NASB95
10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
Note: Death is alienation (separation) from the life of God (turn to Eph4:18)
Ephesians 4:18 NASB95
18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
God-life is from the Father (ref: 1Jn1:1-4; Jn3:16)
Death is separation from Fellowship with God (turn to 1Jn1:5-10)
1 John 1:5–10 NASB95
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
Fellowship with God is He sharing life with us and us with Him (turn to 2Pt1:1-4; ref: Jn17:3)
2 Peter 1:1–4 NASB95
1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
Fellowship with god is our active participation in true life (ref 1Jn1:4, 7; turn to Heb6:4)
Hebrews 6:4 NASB95
4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
Fellowship with God is severed, separated by sin and death.
The law of sin and death described
The law of the spirit of life that is in Christ Jesus frees one from the law of sin and of death (turn to Rom8:1-3)
Romans 8:1–3 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
The “Law of Moses” was unable, nor was it ever intended to, free one from sin and death. (turn to Gal3:12, ref to Lev18:5, Rom10:4, 7:10, 14, 22-24)
Galatians 3:12 NASB95
12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them.”
The law was weak through the flesh (ref: Rom8:3; turn to Heb7:18; then ref: Heb9:1-17)
Hebrews 7:18 NASB95
18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness
The law could not justify sinners. for man is saved by grace through faith not on any basis of deeds done (Turn to Gal3:15-22; ref 2:16, 21, and Rom3:20)
Galatians 3:15–22 NASB95
15 Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise. 19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
