What does “Jesus is Lord” mean for me?
Psalm 135:6 ESV
Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.
“Jesus is Lord” means he does whatever he pleases.
Psalm 77:16–19 ESV
When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.
“Jesus is Lord” means unfathomable power and mysterious workings.
Mark 6:45–47 ESV
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.
“Jesus is Lord” even when you can’t see it.
Mark 6:48–49 ESV
And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,
“they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against”
The disciples aren’t in danger. They just aren’t getting anywhere.
“the fourth watch of the night”
Sailing across this sea is about a 10 hour trip. The fourth watch is between 3-6 AM.
“he came to them, walking on the sea”
“he meant to pass by them”
Mark 6:53–56 ESV
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
Not every story is about you. The Lord works among others, too.
“they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified”
There is nothing in our experience that prepares us for the effortless power of the Lord.
Mark 6:50 ESV
for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
The presence of the Lord is a blessing, not a burden.
Mark 6:51 ESV
And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,
The Lord walked on the sea because he could.
The Lord got in the boat because you can’t.
“Jesus is Lord” means the God of the Universe is for us.
