Overcoming the World

We all love a victory...

The "Miracle on Ice" was an ice hockey game during the

1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

It was played between the hosting United States and the Soviet Union on February 22, 1980,

during the medal round of the men's hockey tournament.

The stage was set for an epic showdown—a David-and-Goliath battle on the ice.

In one corner stood the mighty Soviet Union, a hockey powerhouse that had dominated the sport for years.

In the other corner, a scrappy group of young American players—college kids, amateurs, and dreamers.

The odds were stacked against Team USA.

The Soviets were undefeated, their skill and discipline unmatched.

But something extraordinary happened that day—

a convergence of determination, teamwork, and sheer will.

Against all expectations, the underdogs prevailed.

The United States defeated the Soviet Union in what would forever be known as the “Miracle on Ice.”

As the final buzzer sounded, sportscaster Al Michaels uttered those immortal words:

“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”

The arena erupted, and a nation rejoiced.

But this victory was more than a hockey game; it was a beacon of hope—

a reminder that even in the darkest hours,

when the odds seem insurmountable, miracles can happen.

Though the Soviet Union was a four-time defending gold medalist

and heavily favored, the United States upset them and won 4–3.

We are often looking for a miracle,

and i think we can all admit

at times

want them badly.

The world seems against us

our job is challenged

our kids are bullied

we are attacked by another

No matter the perceived odds

we must remember the statement of Jesus

I have Overcome the World

I love the Victory and the Reminder

but we should not forget

HE DID IT FOR US

This is not a victory on ICE in the Olympics

Cool to remember

But a life changing

Reality that changes everything

This Life and the Next in Heaven

Jesus has set up a dichotomy

Now and later

Grief and Joy

We like to live in the here and now.

We see our problem before we see the blessing

OR

We see the blessing and miss the BIG PICTURE

We Focus on the joy or the problem at hand

We like to hope for things to get better,

but even then most of have a short term vision

PRAYER ALWAYS is our CONNECTION to THE FATHER

Here in our verses last week and the next few weeks

we are going to PUSH your THINKING

Focus and Motivation on God’s WILL ALONE

We must train our minds to focus on God’s Plan is always evolving

When we connect to the Father:

Our stress goes down

Our Joy lifts up.

we must remember that Jesus has overcome the World

Should we ask this question:

Who is in control?

God is working all things for good for us, according to his purpose

Romans 8:28 ESV

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Shakespeare said it this way

All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely Players;

They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts

We are not the Director of the Play

but how we play it matters

We are not the Producers of Life

God alone granted and predestined our existence

We are not the Critics

For we should simply praise God in all things --

James 1:2 (ESV)

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,

We are chosen and placed in this World — it is merely a stage

for our citizenship is in Heaven

We have a role to play —

and we should play it

according to the Script ---tures

We are not in charge

and all the Glory for our performance goes to GOD.

Every one loves a VICTORY

and i know the END of the Story.

We often forget that JESUS HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD

Set the Stage

The Disciples, are like us

We hear the Word and get confused

We see the Work and mis place the responsibility

We wonder --- What to i do now?

and then either lean on our own understanding

or do nothing

You know the Father

you have all that you need to Know the Father

The problem is NOT the lack of

but the motivation of connecting to the Father

its like walking into a Library

and assuming we can YELL OUT

I want to Learn

and the knowledge appears in your brain.

You have to learn to learn

We have to be TAUGHT TO THINK properly

You have to OBEY a plan and then do the plan

AND OUR ASKING IS OUR PRAYING

Prayer is submission to Christ

We ask because we admit our weakness and our NEED

We pray in patience with the knowledge that God is in Control

We don’t need to have Jesus Physical present

THIS IS IMPORTANT

Jesus is telling the Disciple that He will not be with them in Physical form for much longer

and HE IS TELLING US HOW TO KNOW THE WAY< THE TRUTH< AND THE LIFE

Jesus is teaching the Disciples

The hour is coming

the change is coming

you will get the Holy Spirit that will lead you in Truth

you ask:

Promised that He will answer

Promised that He has your BEST in Mind

and Assured that NOTHING has the Power over Jesus.

We know that there will be trouble

Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but

against the rulers,

against the authorities,

against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

We have the Armour of God to put in and wear in this world.

We must submit in PRAYER --- to ASK

We learn to ask in His name

We simply must learn to ask with the right motivation

James 1:5–8 (ESV)

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

When you are the young member of TEAM USA ---

when you are a young Christian

know that Satan has won a few Gold medals in this World

--- He has a powerful Team

and In his ignorance is assuming that He will Win

BUT WE END UP WITH THE GOLD CROWN

Here is TRUTH --- SATAN knows the outcome --

- He wants to damage as much as he can prior to the end of the game.

do you remember the scene in karate kid

When Daniel san has the injury in his leg

When the evil opposing Sensei tells his challenger to “SWEEP THE LEG”

A man tells a boy to win at all cost. to hurt his opponent so that he can experience an evil win

This is the way of Satan

John 16:25–33 (ESV)

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech.

The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;

27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech!

30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.

33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus today....

Does not talk to us in parables

nor does He ask on our behalf

Because of Jesus -----we can go directly to the Father

The Disciples did not have the Holy Spirit

BUT we DO

We are the scattered --- we are with the Father through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit lives in us if we are Believers

and Jesus — THE TRUTH tells us......

I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD

my dear beloved Christian

we should be learning

to WALK in FAITH

and in that Faith

we Walk in Confidence

our message today is a reminder

that Jesus wins!!

This world WILL have tribulation

Our Life in Christ --- is Peace

for Christ is the King of Peace

honestly

Jesus has always been the WINNER

There is no doubt in my mind

Jesus has OVERCOME THE WORLD

Satan and Sin - are tempered and controlled

We are VICTORS

We can wave our JESUS WINS flag

like the Fans at the 1980 Miracle on ICE

the world thinks and teaches us we don’t have a chance

but MY SAVIOR

YOUR SAVIOR

Paid the Price

and WON it ALL

and WE get the Privilege to WALK in CONFIDENCE

We have the PRIVILEGE OF PRAYER

That JESUS is in control of ALL

and that HE has overcome the world.

Lets Pray
