Reflection
Reflection
Silence
· As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to clear our minds, so that we can hear him better.

Opening Prayer
(Thursday)
· Father, when we spend time in your word and set our hearts on your teaching, we flourish like a lush tree planted by a stream of fresh water. Teach us today and nourish our souls. (from Psalm 1)

Passage
Today I’ll be reading from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, chapter 5 verses 19-20:
19 Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord.
20 Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Exhortation
I bet you’ve seen a movie where the characters sing various songs throughout the story. These movies are called musicals. Does you have a favorite musical? Maybe it’s Mary Poppins, or Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, or The Prince of Egypt? In our house we absolutely love a musical called The Sound of Music. In all of these classic movies the characters sing songs to each other and to the world around them. Typically, musicals are stories marked with joy and wonder. Songs have the ability to affect us in ways speaking can’t. Songs can easily move us from one mood to another. They can lift our spirits and bring joy, actually they can help us express all kinds of emotions we may be feeling.
In our passage today, the Apostle Paul is talking to the church. He's talking to Christians, people who follow King Jesus, people who the Father of Heaven has lovingly adopted into his forever family. And Paul is telling this family sing! What an interesting command. "Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord." The Church is God’s family, and it is a musical family filled with joy and wonder! The songs we sing are mainly songs of thanksgiving to our Father in heaven. When Christians get together we sing songs to each other about the wonders of King Jesus. The music we make on our hearts should be bursting with gratitude. But how often should we be grateful to the Father? And what do we thank him for? Pauls says, “Always give thanks to God the Father for everything…”
Call to Action: Let’s take a moment, right now, just for a few seconds to quietly thank the Father for one thing in our life. Is it a person? Maybe a family member, or friend, maybe a neighbor? Whatever it is take this moment to tell God thank you.

Closing Prayer
Let me pray for us now.
[3 seconds of silence]
Father in heaven you are good, and we are grateful. Every good gift comes from you. You’re love for us is everlasting and unbreakable. We ask that your Spirit will stir up music in our hearts, music that sings your praise. And of course we ask this in the marvelous name of your Son, and our King, Jesus. Amen.
