Isaiah 58:6–8 “6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, And to let the oppressed go free, And that ye break every yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, And that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; And that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? 8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, And thine health shall spring forth speedily: And thy righteousness shall go before thee; The glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward.”

II. We Are to Not Oppress the Poor or Needy

A. The Lord Will Arise and Set Them in Safety From Those Who Are Puffed Up Against Them

Psalm 12:5 “5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, Now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.”

B. You Will Come to Want, If Your Oppress the Poor to Increase His Riches or to Give to the Rich

Proverbs 22:16 “16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, And he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.”

III. You Will Be Cursed for Treating the Poor Badly

A. You Will Not Lack, If You Give to the Poor

B. But If You Hide Your Eyes to the Needs of the Poor, You Will Be Cursed

Proverbs 28:27 “27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: But he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.”

C. Daniel Told the King That He Could Break Off His Sins by Showing Righteousness Mercy to the Poor

Daniel 4:27 “27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.”

D. If Your Brother Waxeth Poor, You Are to Relieve Even If He is a Stranger or Sojourner

Leviticus 25:35 “35 And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.”

IV. What Jesus Said About the Poor

A. Jesus Told the Rich Man to Sell All Had and Distribute to the Poor

Luke 18:22 “22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.”

B. Jesus Said That He Came to Preach the Gospel to the Poor

Luke 4:18 “18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

V. Paul Said in Ephesian, to Let the Thief Steal No More, But Labor With His Hands and Give to the Needy or Poor

Ephesians 4:28 “28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”
