Passage
Today’s passage is from Psalm 51 verses 10-12:
10 Create in me a pure heart, God. Make my spirit right again.
11 Do not send me away from you. Do not take your Holy Spirit2 away from me.

Exhortation
King David was a great King. God loved David, and David loved God. David did great deeds in God’s name for Israel. He slayed the giant Goliath, defeated Israel’s enemies, he made the plans for God’s temple in Jerusalem, and he wrote numerous sacred songs that were filled with God’s praises. We call those songs, Psalms.
Here’s something to always remember. The Apostle Paul said it clearly in his letter to the Romans: “All people have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God.” Jesus’ disciple, John, said that “No one is without sin.” In fact, even King David said in the 14th Psalm that “all have gone astray.” So, why am I telling you this? Because David was indeed a great king and a great man, but he was also a sinner. Perhaps David’s most well known sin is when he had his loyal servant killed and stole his wife (her name was Bathsheba). Yikes! That sounds terrible! God sent a prophet to David, to tell him that he was not happy about this. In our passage today, David is sorry for the evil he has done, and is crying out for forgiveness.
He asks God to give him a clean, pure heart. David knows that he needs a new heart. A heart that won’t stray away from God’s good way. He needs his spirit to be right again. In order for this to happen he needs the Holy Spirit. David doesn’t just want forgiveness from God. He knows the he needs God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to be with him, and change him, so that he will walk in God’s ways, and delight in God’s will.
Call to Action: We all have sinned, and we all need forgiveness. We all need pure hearts. Indeed, we all need the Holy Spirit to live within us, to guide us, and to give us a heart that loves God’s way. Let’s take a few seconds to reflect on this truth.

Let's pray together.
[3 seconds of silence]
Father we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deeds. Please, fill us with your Holy Spirit. Transform our hearts and renew our minds. For our good and your glory. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
