Introduction

Hello Dwell, this is Kenneth.
[1 second pause]
Today is Monday, September 16th. Thanks for joining us for today's Dwell Kids Daily!
[2 seconds of silence]
For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.

Reflection

Silence
· As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to clear our minds, so that we can hear him better.
[5 seconds of silence]
Opening Prayer
(Monday)
· The heavens were formed and filled by your word, O God. When you spoke the stars shone forth in the night sky. Help us hear your words today – shape our hearts according to your will. (from Psalm 33)

Passage
Today’s passage is Genesis 1:1-2:
English Standard Version (Chapter 1)
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Exhortation
A first sentence can tell you a lot about a story. The other day I was watching the movie Tangled with my youngest daughter (for the hundredth time) and we noticed that the first words of the movie are Flynn Rider (whose real name is Eugene of course) saying, “This is the story of how I died.” It’s funny because by the end of the movie, you’ve probably totally forgotten that he starts the story this way. You only get it the second time you watch it.
This is sort of how the first sentence of the Bible is. Sure, it’s pretty straight forward when you first read it. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. But when you’ve read the whole Bible, including John chapter 1, you now know that Jesus and the Father are included in the word “God” in this first sentence. This was always the meaning, we just didn’t know it until later in the story. But, if you know that the one God is actually three persons (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) you may be wondering where the Spirit is in creation. Well, he’s right there in the second sentence of the Bible! “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” In the beginning there was deep dark waters. There was no light, no sun or moon, or stars, there were no fish, there was no land or trees, or animals, there were no birds or clouds, it was just wild waters. But the Spirit was hovering over the water. All three persons of the Trinity are right there ready to launch creation! New light and life bursts forth just after the Spirit is mentioned. This tells us a lot about the Holy Spirit. He brings light into dark places, and brings life in to dead places. This is why the Bible says later that those who are filled with the Holy Spirit are new creations.
Call to Action: Why don’t we take a few seconds, right now, to quietly reflect on the wonder of this amazing passage.
[7 seconds of silence]
Closing Prayer
Now, let me pray for us.
[3 seconds of silence]
Father, bring new life and light into our hearts. In the power of the Holy Spirit form us into the people you want us to be, and fill us with faith. We ask this in the name of King Jesus. Amen.

Outro

"It's been a joy to be with you." (or something similar)
Tomorrow, we'll be in the book of Exodus. Until then, go in peace, and let the word of King Jesus dwell in you richly.
